Alloy
al-loy (āl’oi’) n.
A metallic substance made by fusing two or
more elements to obtain desirable qualities.
Merge iron and carbon and they become stronger than either element alone.
Similarly, it takes the right mix of disciplines, personalities, and experiences
to create successful products that are greater than the sum of their parts.
We work diligently and creatively to strengthen all elements of a project with
world-class mechanical engineering and thoughtful collaboration.
Services Mechanical Concept Development: We specialize in conceiving and prototyping mechanical concepts. We search for elegant and
robust solutions to difficult me chanism and packaging problems. Analysis: We utilize mathematical analysis and computer simulations to predict results and provide direction. Industrial Design Integration: Great engineering and design go hand in hand. We work with clients and designers up front to
provide mechanical feasibility and feedback so the industrial design has the integrity to survive the
development process. We then work diligently to maintain ID intent through to production. Detailed Mechanical Design for Manufacturing: We use the latest CAD tools and deep knowledge of many manufacturing processes to develop
production-ready parts, assemblies, and documentation. Vendor Liaison: We work directly with manufacturers to oversee development, tooling, and production progress and
to ensure quality execution. When needed, we travel overseas for onsite, hands-on collaboration. Project Management: We work with a network of contractors, firms, and manufacturers to handle a wide range of project
scopes. We apply sound project management processes to keep everyone in sync and bring
products to fruition.

We were deeply involved in the
development, refinement and
production ramp of Aliph’s new
Bluetooth headset.
We worked closely with the
client, industrial designers, and
manufacturer to maintain a
difficult balance between
numerous competing
constraints.
Extensive travel to Asia enabled
tight collaboration with the
manufacturer.

Famous musician/producer Dr.
Dre, Ammunition Design, and
Monster Cable partnered to kick
off Dre’s audio product line with
these top-of-the-line, noise-
cancelling headphones. We
were brought in early to refine
the factory’s first pass at the
layout. It soon became clear
that we needed to rebuild it from
the ground up. We developed a
unique architecture for the
pivoting ear-cups, integrated
hinges with hidden wiring, and
seamless padding. We saw
every mechanical detail through
over the 2+ year process of
changing specifications and
refinements, including overseas
travel to work with the
manufacturer. The result was a
highly acclaimed product, a top
pick on Apple.com.

HTC set out to develop an
entire suite of mobile products
with a cohesive design
language. We were initially
hired by the ID team to model
the subtly faceted rear surfaces.
We then modeled the detailed
exterior geometry of the entire
line of 11 products including
part breaks, keypads, and styli.
We used the rough component
layouts as guidelines to make
sure the designs and
proportions could weather the
detailed development phase. A
number of the designs, such as
this Touch Diamond and Touch
Pro, made it through production
virtually unchanged.

Fuego took the grilling world by
storm with their award-winning
grill and discovered a market
yearning for high-design
outdoor cooking fixtures. Their
answer was another award
winning design for this outdoor
kitchen that is customized with
different cooking and storage
modules. We took initial 2D
drawings and developed a
complete 3D database,
collaborating with the designers
to fine tune proportions and
basic construction. We
coordinated the fabrication and
assembly of the pictured
prototype used for industry
shows. It generated huge
demand, giving Fuego the
confidence to have us further
detail the design for production,
due in 2009.

The industrial design team at
Lunar desired a novel user
interaction for revealing and
concealing the USB connector.
But they had no idea how to
make the motion a reality.
After a week of conceptual
design, we generated working
breadboards that gave the client
the confidence to invest in
detailed CAD.
The very first machined
prototype worked beautifully
and electrified the design team.
We were then challenged to
integrate a disappearing cover
for the connector hole. To the
team’s surprise, we were able
to accomplish this as well.

With the product already
designed for steel skins, we
were asked to help transition
the product to aluminum. But to
provide similar stiffness, the
aluminum needed to be roughly
50% thicker. This rendered
many of the original design
features impossible.
We redesigned the 2 keypad
skins, their associated hinge
attachments, latch, and other
features. The resulting product
was solid, yet functional and
beautiful. And noticeably
lighter.
