Charles Carl Roberts IV

•Murdered 5 Amish girls before killing himself
at West Nickel Mines School
•Left his three children and wife with several
suicide letters
The Beginning of the Attack
•Robert parked his milk truck outside of the Amish
Schoolhouse at 10:25 am.
•He asked the teacher, Emma Mae Zook, and the
students if they had seen a clevis pin (fastener system
for trucks) on the road. The students denied seeing the
pin and Roberts went back out to his truck.
•He returned with a 9mm handgun. He ordered the boys
to carry the items in the back of his truck inside with him.
Zook took this opportunity to escape the school and run
to a nearby farm for help.
Hostages
•Roberts ordered the girls in the classroom to line
up against the chalkboard.
•He allowed a pregnant woman, three parents with
infants, and all of the boys to leave the
schoolhouse. On girl, Emma Fisher, also
escaped. There were ten hostages in the room.
•Using wooden boards, brought into the classroom
from the truck, Roberts barricaded the front door.
Police and Emergency Medical Arrival
•The 911 call arrived at 10:36 am.
•The first trooper arrived at
approximately 10:42 am.
•While Roberts tied the hands and
feet of his hostages with plastic
ties, he told approaching troopers
to leave immediately. He
threatened to shoot the girls.
•The police communicated with
Roberts through the PA system in
their cruisers. They asked him to
throw out his weapons and exit the
schoolhouse but he declined.
The Shooting
•At 11:07 am Roberts
opened fire.
•The troopers
immediately
approached after the
first gun shot but by
the time they got their
Roberts had
committed suicide.
The Aftermath
•After the police got inside the schoolhouse,
all of the wounded girls were taken to
hospitals. Four had died at the school house
and one survived until morning of the 7th.
•Reports stated that most of the girls were
shot "execution-style" in the back of the
head. The ages of the victims ranged from
six to thirteen.

The massacre left 5 young girls dead and 5 others injured.
