PREVALENCE, CAUSES, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF BIPOLAR DISORDER STEPHEN A . AMOSU 20 /60/0062

INTRODUCTION Bipolar disorder is a serious, chronic mental illness characterized by unusual changes in mood, energy, and activity levels. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of bipolar disorder are important because the illness carries a high risk of suicide and can severely impair academic and work performance, social and family relationships, and quality of life

Episodes of Bipolar Disorder

TYPES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER Bipolar disorder is characterized as type I or type II . Type I is diagnosed when at least one manic episode is identified. Bipolar disorder type II requires the absence of even one manic episode, and instead the occurrence of at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode.

CAUSES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER Genetic factors Pregnancy and Birth Complications Neurotransmitters (Biochemical factors) Recent life events and bipolar disorder

MYTHS ABOUT BIPOLAR DISORDER Bipolar Disorder cannot be diagnosed in Children. There is a misconception that bipolar disorder only affects adults . Bipolar Disorder Patients are Harmful People with mental illnesses are frequently stereotyped as violent, sick, unstable, and (by extension) dangerous; nevertheless, these stereotypes may not be accurate. Bipolar Disorder can only be treated with Medication. Bipolar Disorder Patients are either Manic or Depressed all of the Time.

PREVENTION OF BIPOLAR DISORDER Family-Focused Therapy This begins with the assumption that negativity in the family environment, although often a product of the stress and burden of caring for an ill relative, is a risk factor for subsequent episodes of bipolar illness Psycho-education The goal of this is to acquaint the family with the signs and symptoms of severe mood disorder and its subsyndromal and prodromal forms.

TREATMENT OF BIPOLAR DISORDER Antidepressants e.g . bupropion Mood Stabilisers e.g . Lithium, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine etc. Antipsychotics e.g . Quetiapine , Lurasidone etc.

CONCLUSION Bipolar disorder occurs in approximately 1 percent of the population. About 10 to 20 percent of patients with bipolar disorder die of their illness by suicide. When deciding treatment options in bipolar depression, it is important to balance to potential benefits and harms.
