WHAT is WHAT is AMRAMR????
Automatic Meter Reading
–Automating the process of
measurement and control through
digital communication techniques.
–Bring “intelligence” into the revenue
cycle and manage it.
Metering Billing Operations Customer Service

National Power Training Institute(NR)
WHY AMR NEEDED in place of current
Stand-alone meter reading??
Present System Problems:-
Highly Person dependant.
Human errors cannot be avoided.
Accessibility of meters in rural/ Agricultural zones.
Energy Audits performed based on bill collection which is
highly inaccurate.
Billing done mainly on estimated/ monthly average basis
Inability to monitor and control discrete loads
Billing cycle requires excessive time.
Meter data used only for billing, cannot help in analysis like
demand analysis, energy audit, pinpointing losses, etc.

National Power Training Institute(NR)
Benefits of AMRBenefits of AMR
Ability to detect tamper events and outage occurrences.
Remotely Connect/ Disconnect power supply through
meter.
Calculate Transformer loading and Sizing from interval
data.
15 minute interval data gives accurate load information for
supply scheduling, switching operations, planning etc.
Monitor voltage at each premise to know conditions when
to operate capacitor switches or regulators.
Consistent and Granular data for improved accuracy.

Meter interface moduleMeter interface module
–The AMR system starts at the meter. Some
means of translating readings from rotating
meter dials, or cyclometer style meter dials,
into digital form is necessary in order to send
digital metering data from the customer site to
a central point.

PREPAID METERSPREPAID METERS

National Power Training Institute(NR)
PREPAID METERS-AdvantagesPREPAID METERS-Advantages
For meter owner
 Assured revenue and reduced working capital costs
 Lower overheads
 Better load management and higher capacity utilization
 Improved fraud detection
 Quicker connections and better customer-service
For end-consumer
 Better budgeting
 Promotes energy savings and energy conservation
 Avoid long queues – choose when to pay
 No billing errors
 Convenient mode of payment

National Power Training Institute(NR)

National Power Training Institute(NR)

National Power Training Institute(NR)
System at workSystem at work
The consumer inserts the pre-paid card in the
energy meter
The value (Credit + Any information) in the card
is transferred to the meter
The meter keeps track of the number of units
consumed as per the slab rate
When the value in the meter comes to 10-20% a
signal is given -either beep or red light
When the value in the meter becomes nil the
electricity supply is cut off

National Power Training Institute(NR)
ApplicationsApplications
Large-scale deployment by utilities for residential and
commercial connections
 Sub-metering in apartments, shopping malls and
building complexes.
 Convenient mode of payment in housing colonies
 As a second meter between utility meter and
distribution board for housing tenants
 Selective deployment by utilities in regions with poor
credit history
 Electricity supply for vendors, contractors and temporary
connections

National Power Training Institute(NR)
Summing up…Summing up…
Prepaid Smart Card Solution is ideal
Reduces manpower cost to the EB
Improves liquidity of the EB
Overall efficiency in operations of
the EB will improve
Hassle free for the consumer
Prepaid cards easily available
