WHAT IS ANEMIA? Defined as decrease in circulating red blood cell mass. Characterized by decrease of hemoglobin concentration ( Hb )/RBC count/hematocrit (PCV) below normal for patient’s age, sex & altitude of residence . Normal adult hemoglobin level is in the range of 13 to 17 g/ dL in males and 12 to 15 g/ dL in females.

Classification 2 Categories:- Morphological classification-3 types Normocytic normochromic Micro cytic hypochromic - e g -Iron deficiency anemia Macrocytic - eg - Megaloblastic anemia Etiological classification-3 types Blood loss - eg -Trauma Impaired red cell production - eg -Aplastic anemia Increased red cell destruction - eg -Hemolytic anemia

IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA M/C nutritional deficiency in our country. CAUSES- Inadequate iron diet High iron demand in conditions like- Pregnant and lactating women Growing children Increased blood loss- Hookworm infestation(in children) Peptic ulcer disease(in adults) Colon cancer(old people) Women with heavy menstrual bleeding Duodenal/intestinal disease
