Finding a good man is like finding a needle in a haystack. That movie was a roller coaster ride of emotions. Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you gonna get. Writing a book of poetry is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo.

ANALOGY

What is analogy? -Analogy shows a relationship between words. -It is a comparison of two things that is quite different from each other. -It describes or explains one thing by examining its similarities with other things. HOW DOES IT IMRPOVE OUR THINKING SKILLS? -It help us learn new words and develop our critical thinking by determining the relationship between words with related ideas.

In showing relationships, analogy uses double colon to split the pair of words into two parts. UP:DOWN :: HOT:COLD (1 st part) (2 nd part) It reads as, UP is an opposite of DOWN, just as HOT is an opposite of COLD. NOTE: These two pair of words is an example of ANTONYM ANALOGY RELATIONSHIP.

There are a number of relationships that can be shown through analogies. minute: hour :: foot: toes Relationship: PART TO WHOLE fork: eat :: shovel: dig Relationship: OBJECT TO FUNCTION “ You use a fork to eat, just like you use a shovel to dig.” EXAMPLES:

glasses: read :: crutches: walk Relationship: OBJECT TO FUNCTION “ Glasses can help you read, as to crutches can help you walk.” EXAMPLE: NOTE: To understand the words given, we must determine first the analogy relationship used between the pair of words presented.

TYPE OF CHARACTERISTICS- pairs of words that are used to highlight and compare their relationship EXAMPLE: skin: smooth

9. PROFESSION AND OBJECT TO STUDY- it has something to do with the field of work and the field of study EXAMPLE: botanist : plants 10. DEGREE OF INTENSITY- comparison of words based on its intensity of meaning. EXAMPLE: small : smallest
