Analysis on Taylor Swift’s CD Album Covers By Jade Delaney

1) 2) 3) 4) Taylor Swift’s Album Covers These are all of Taylor Swifts album covers over the years. Each of very different and they all show how she has slowly changed as an artist with her target audience. Growing with what her listeners want and the new trends. We can see what she has kept in order to keep the Taylor Swift brand going but what she has also needed to change in order to target more people.

Taylor Swift’s First Album Cover This first album is about making Taylor Swift a well known artist and brand. At this point she is new to the music industry so a portrait style image of her is ideal. This album cover is trying to promote who Taylor Swift is and its already trying to address her target audience by the composition of the CD cover. The blue and green background is almost beach or jungle like, as if she is surrounded by nature. This coincides with her beach natural look, the wavy blonde hair and natural makeup shows her innocence. This is an ideal look when trying to attract a young audience This is the branded logo for Taylor Swift. The font goes well with the rest of the image that she is trying to portray The butterflies continue the girly and natural beauty theme

This is more of a confident pose compared to her first album cover. The wind blowing in her hair shows her confidence. She is becoming less sweet and young; by wearing gold (glamorous connotations) and having more of her body exposed in the image like her neck it shows how she is growing with her target audience. As well as the image the block bold and capital print of ‘fearless’ links well showing that Taylor Swift is now here to stay and has a clear path she is going in. Taylor Swift’s Second Album Cover Although we see that Taylor is looking more fearless in this image, the way that she is framed still shows a sense of in secureness that is a bit mysterious. She’s not making direct address with the camera however she has grown up from her last album, she is wearing more makeup and the colour scheme is almost ‘more expensive’ looking. The same logo/font is used as the trade mark for her CD covers and keeps that recognition with who she is going

Taylor Swift’s Third Album Cover She has kept the same style with her hair in all three albums so far so we are still able to recognise her as the same artist. She has more makeup in this image, and has introduced red lipstick which has connotations of being more grown up and sexy The same logo/font is used as the trade mark for her CD covers and keeps that recognition with who she is going. Taylor is giving direct address to the camera and is therefore looking stronger as an artist although her stance is still not that powerful. The purple dress looks like a ballroom dress and resembles a flower, this is something that her young audience would appreciate and would catch young girls attention. ‘Speak now’ is in a similar font to ‘Taylor Swift’ it follows the girly theme and the delicate dress, it also a little bit like a signature on the CD which makes it more personal

Taylor Swift’s Fourth Album Cover This album has changed dramatically form the ones previous, this may be because she is trying to get a different image. She could be growing with her fans and the times and has made the decision to change and have a more grown up look. She may also be wanting to attract a different or broader audience, and this could be due to a change in her music. Her style may be changing with the new music she is bringing out . Her old approach to the music industry might not be working and she wants to break into the more successful and booming sections of the music industry. The dark area around her eyes that is hard to see makes Taylor seem very mysterious and intriguing. This is different to her last albums, although she isn’t always looking into the camera and has her face turned we are able to see more of her face. With this shadowing the red lips are highlighted more so and works well with the title of the album. The title in this album stands out and matches well with the image. Her hair for the first time is slightly different in this album cover. It looks to be in a more 60’s style of fashion, coinciding with the red lipstick The ‘Taylor Swift’ compared to how it has always been in her albums previous has now changed for the first time. The bold capitalization is more of a statement and suggests that he is a new Taylor Swift. This is a bold statement and works well for this artist if she wants to change her direction.
