ANATOMICAL SUFFIX
•The term anatomical suffix refers to a word ending
that modifies the meaning of a root word to
describe a part of a body, a condition or a
procedure related to body.
•These terms are commonly used in surgery and
medical practice to describe procedures where a
controlled cutting or incision is made in a specific
area of the body for diagnosis,treatment or occur
to deeper structure.
-tomy
•The suffix tomy comes from greek word TOME
means cut or incision .
•It is used in medical terminology to indicate a
surgical incision or the act of cutting into a body
part
•when we see the term tomy: Typically refers to a
procedure in which part of the body is cut open or
an incision is made
For example:
•Laparotomy: surgical incision into abdominal cavity.
•Tracheotomy:surgical incision into trachea
•Craniotomy: surgical incision into skull
•Where it is found in terms that specify the body
part or organ involved in procedure.
•Examples:
•Thoracotomy: surgical incision into chest
•Gastrotomy: surgical incisioin into stomach
•Arthropods: surgical incision into joint

•The suffix ema is used in medical terminology to
describe a condition or disease often related to
swelling of a substance in a tissue or organ
frequently used in terms referring to pathalogical
states involving abnormal fluid accumulationof
affecting tissue .
Examples of where ema is used
•Edema: Abnormal accumulation of fluid of tissue
causing swelling
•Emphysema: A condition of the lungs where air
sacs(alveoli) become damage and enlarged leading
to difficulty breathing
•Pyemesis: The presence of pus of vomit
•When:
•In condition with fluid build up
•In some cases of tissue alternation or damage.
•Examples:-
•1)Emphysema
•2)Edema
•3)Myxema
•How:Accumulative or swelling condition
•The suffix open referred to the accumulation of
substance such as fluid In the tissue leading to
swelling abnormal growth
•Eg:Edema
