ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT P.E 1 BSEE 1B – GROUP 2

ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT The actions of muscles on the skeleton are described using anatomical words of movement. In order for joints to move, muscles must contract, and the resulting movements can be clearly described using such terms.

"Excursion" ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 3 refers to the distance traveled by a body part or joint from its resting or beginning position when referring to anatomical words and movements. It is frequently employed to describe the range of motion of a particular body part or joint. Let's examine some relevant anatomical expressions and motions for excursion in more detail:

Flexion and Extension

FLEXION ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 5 Bending or reducing the angle between two body parts or joints is referred to as flexion.

Extension ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 6 Straightening or increasing the angle between them is what extension entails. When you bend your elbow, you are flexing it; when you straighten it, you are stretching it.

Abduction and Adduction

abduction ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 8 Abduction is the movement of a bodily portion away from the body's midline.

aDduction ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 9 Adduction is the movement of a bodily portion closer to the midline. For example, spreading your fingers apart is abduction, and drawing them back together is adduction.

Rotation

Rotation ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 11 Rotation is the twisting or turning of a bodily component around its axis. Internal rotation (movement towards the midline of the body) and external rotation (movement away from the midline) are the two types. Turning your head from side to side is an example of rotation.

Pronation and Supination

pronation ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 13 Pronation is defined as the inward rotation of the forearm, which causes the palm to face downward.

supination ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 14 supination is the opposite movement where the forearm rotates outward and the palm faces upward. These movements are notable when you rotate your hand to pour a glass of water (supination) and then turn it to empty it (pronation).

Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion

dorsiflexion ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 16 Dorsiflexion is the movement of the foot upward, bringing the toes closer to the shin.

plantarflexion ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 17 Plantarflexion is the downward pointing of the toes. Plantarflexion occurs when you stand on your tiptoes, but dorsiflexion occurs when you move your foot forward towards your shin.

Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion

These are only a few anatomical words and motions associated with excursion. ANATOMICAL TERMS OF MOVEMENT 19 It is crucial to remember that the human body is extremely complex, with various joints and muscles collaborating to allow for a wide variety of movements. Each body component and joint has its own set of movements and restrictions, and using anatomical terminologies allows us to more correctly describe and comprehend these motions.
