Anatomy of Carcinoma Lung Overview of Lung Cancer Anatomy

Introduction • Carcinoma lung is the most common type of lung cancer. • Classified broadly into small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). • Anatomical understanding is crucial for diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning.

Gross Anatomy of Lung • Right lung: 3 lobes (superior, middle, inferior). • Left lung: 2 lobes (superior, inferior) + cardiac notch. • Each lobe is divided into bronchopulmonary segments. • Cancer can arise in central (hilar) or peripheral regions.

Microscopic Anatomy • Respiratory epithelium: pseudostratified columnar ciliated cells with goblet cells. • Alveoli: Type I and Type II pneumocytes. • Carcinomas originate from epithelial lining of bronchi, bronchioles, or alveoli.

Types of Carcinoma Lung • Small Cell Carcinoma (SCLC) – aggressive, central location. • Non-Small Cell Carcinoma (NSCLC): – Adenocarcinoma: peripheral, most common type. – Squamous cell carcinoma: central, linked to smoking. – Large cell carcinoma: poorly differentiated.

Spread of Carcinoma Lung • Local invasion: pleura, chest wall, mediastinum. • Lymphatic spread: hilar, mediastinal nodes. • Hematogenous spread: brain, bone, liver, adrenal glands.

Clinical Relevance • Anatomical knowledge guides biopsy and surgery. • Determines resectability of tumor. • Helps predict symptoms like cough, hemoptysis, chest pain. • Essential for staging (TNM classification).
