ANATOMY OF SPACE VEHICLE Eby P Henry SR No 17162 M Tech (AE)

SCOPE Introduction History Types of space vehicle Space vehicle layout and subsystems Examples of space vehicle designs 10/25/2019 2

INTRODUCTION A space vehicle is a rocket-powered vehicle used to transport robotic spacecraft or human carrying vehicles between the earth's surface and outer space Space vehicles are point designs Defining ‘conventional’ space vehicle configuration is difficult Launched into space by rocket boosters till date 10/25/2019 3

HISTORY Principle of rocketry used more than 2000 years ago Around 400 B.C , Archytas showed off a wooden pigeon that was suspended on wires. The pigeon was pushed around by the escaping steam Hero of Alexandria is said to have invented the ‘ aeolipile ’ Chinese developed the first real rockets around the first century A.D. They were used for colorful displays during religious festivals Initial rockets were used as military weapons 10/25/2019 4

HISTORY Konstantin E Tsiolkovsky published what is now known as the ‘ rocket equation’ in 1903 Robert Goddard had constructed and successfully tested the first rocket using liquid fuel Herman Oberth helped the Nazi’s to develop V-2 rocket during world war II Soviets launched Sputnik mission in 1957 US used Jupiter-C rocket to heft its Explorer I satellite into space in 1958 10/25/2019 5

HISTORY 10/25/2019 6 Flying Pigeon Aeolipile Robbert Goddard’s first liquid fuelled rocket

SPACE VEHICLE SUBSYSTEMS Structural Thermal Control Power Communication Attitude Control and Sensor Life Support Propulsion 10/25/2019 8

GENERAL LAYOUT Service module includes engine , power subsystem, steering system and communications system Payload module consists of science instruments 10/25/2019 9

LAUNCH VEHICLE Most space vehicles are launched into space by multistage rockets The design choice is expendable rockets though the concept of reusable rockets in experimental stage Most of the rockets share a common anatomy with multiple stages and solid/liquid propellants with the payload atop 10/25/2019 10

SPACECRAFT Spacecraft are designed to land on or simply fly by planets in solar system It can be a satellite in orbit around the earth or a deep space vehicle on its way to another planet Examples include Pathfinder , Mangalyaan , Mariner , Voyager and satellites for various missions 10/25/2019 19

SPACECRAFT Mars Orbiter Mission Configured to carry out observation of physical features of mars/ martian atmosphere with five payloads:- Mars Colour Camera (MCC) Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS) Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM) Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) 10/25/2019 22

SPACESHUTTLE Space shuttle is a part airplane and part space vehicle They are partly reusable system Shuttle orbiter is the airplane configuration that sits on the side of the Rocket booster The rocket booster does have SRBs and external fuel tank Eg : Space shuttle programme of NASA comprised of orbiters enterprise, challenger, columbia , discovery, atlantis and endeavour Ref: https://www.isro.gov.in/Spacecraft/Mangalyaan 10/25/2019 25

SPACE SHUTTLE The orbiters will have its on orbital maneuvering/reaction control systems etc Ref: https://www.isro.gov.in/Spacecraft/Mangalyaan 10/25/2019 26

SPACE SHUTTLE Gaganyaan Mission Profile 10/25/2019 29

CONCLUSION There are about as many different space vehicle configurations as there are different missions Unlike conventional airplanes , spacecratfs does not share a common anatomy Space vehicles fly in the near vacuum No aerodynamic forces on the vehicles and hence no specific external configurations Ref: https://www.isro.gov.in/Spacecraft/Mangalyaan 10/25/2019 30
