TONGUE

TONGUE

INTRODUCTION

FUNCTIONS OF TONGUE Organ of Taste, mastication, deglutition & speech Lower animals – thermo-regulation Tongue prints – pattern of lingual papillae medico legal purposes Clinically – helps in diagnosis Facial expression

Tip (or) apex Base Root Body – dorsal and ventral surface PRESENTING PARTS

BASE OF THE TONGUE

DORSAL SURFACE

Papillae - Vallate papillae - Fungiform papillae - Foliate papillae - Filiform papillae.

Ventral surface Frenulum linguae Plica fimbriata Deep lingual vein

Lateral margin

Root of the Tongue

Muscles Extrinsic muscles- alter the position of the tongue - Genioglossus - Hyoglossus ( Chondroglossus ) - Styloglossus - Palatoglossus

GENIOGLOSSUS

HYOGLOSSUS

STYLOGLOSSUS Styloglossus

PALATOGLOSSUS

Superior longitudinal Inferior longitudinal Intrinsic muscles- alter the shape of the tongue Transverse Vertical

Muscles altering the shape of the tongue Making the dorsum concave- Genioglossi , sup.long.muscles , verticalis and styloglossi ; Making the dorsum convex- Hyoglossi , inf.long.muscles , verticalis ; Muscles shortening the tongue- Sup.and inf.long.muscles , verticalis ; Muscles elongating the tongue- Transversus linguae .

Nerve supply of Tongue Motor – Somatomotor - all the muscles of the tongue are supplied by hypoglossal nerve except palatoglossus cranial part of accessory nerve through pharyngeal plexus Secreto -motor- to lingual glands- superior salivatory nucleus-facial – chorda tympani and lingual nerve- submandibular ganglion- lingual nerve - glands Vasomotor- sympathetic nerves- superior cervical ganglion- lingual artery.

Sensory 1. Ant 2/3 – general – lingual nerve special – chorda tympani nerve (except vallate papillae) 2. Post 1/3 - general and special – glossopharyngeal nerve (including vallate papillae) 3. Posterior most ( Vallecula ) – internal laryngeal nerve - superior laryngeal nerve vagus nerve

Lymphatic Drainage of Tongue

PECULARITIES OF LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE Lymph Vessels do not accompany blood vessels. Tip rich in lymph vessels. Free anastamosis between both sides. Cancer spread bilaterally to both side nodes.
