2. What is an Anecdotal record? Anecdotes is the basic way of collecting data during observation in addition to observation checklist. It focuses on behaviors of particular interest. Informal device used by the teacher to record behavior of students as observed by him from time to time. It provides a lasting record of behavior which may be useful later in contributing to a judgment about a student.

3. Definition of an Anecdotal Record? An anecdotal record is a report of a significant episode in the life of a student. R. Louis An Anecdotal record is a simple statement of an incident deemed by the observer to be significant with respect to a given pupil. J D Williard

4. Characteristics of Anecdotal Records Factual descriptions of what happened, when it happened and under what circumstances the behavior occurred. The interpretations & recommended action should be noted separately from the description. Each anecdotal record should contain a record of a single incident. The incident recorded should be that is considered to be significant to the students’ growth and development.

5. Purposes of Anecdotal Records To furnish the multiplicity of evidence needed for good cumulative record. To substitute for vague generalizations about students specific exact description of behavior. To stimulate teachers to look for information that is pertinent in helping each student realize good self-adjustment. To understand individual’s basic personality pattern and his reactions in different situations.

6. The teacher is able to understand her pupil in a realistic manner. It provides an opportunity for healthy pupil-teacher relationship It can be maintained in the areas of behavior that cannot be evaluated by other systematic method. 8. Advantages of A necdotal Records Provision of insight into total behavioral incidents. Are easy to use and quick to write Allows educators to record qualitative information, like details about a child’s specific behavior or the conversation between two children. The details can help educators plan activities, experiences and interventions. It is better means of data collection which is helpful to improve relationship with teachers and peers. Open ended and can catch unexpected events.

9. Disadvantages of Anecdotal Records If carelessly recorded, the purpose will not be fulfilled. If objectivity in data collection is not followed and maintained strictly, then anecdotes are of little use. Quality of the record depends on the memory of the person doing the observation. Incidents can be taken out of context. Lack of standardization. Difficulty in scoring Limited application Time consuming.
