Introduction S tarted : 1975 as part of the  Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)  program to combat child hunger and  malnutrition . No. of Anganwadis in India : 13.87 lac No. of Anganwadis in J & k : 20,428 AWC means Courtyard shelter By WCD- Women & Child Development Department Funding: 90:10

Objectives to improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age-group 0-6 years. 2. to lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of the child . 3. to reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout .

4. to achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various departments to promote child development. 5. to enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education .

Population Norms AWCs: Rural plain areas /Urban areas: 1AWC/800 population Hilly/ Tribal/ Desert/ Difficult to reach area: 1AWC/400-800 population Mini AWCs: 1 Mini AWC/ 150-300 Population Anganwadi on Demand : settlement with 40, <6 years children with no AWC in that area.

Staff Norm 1 AWC: 1 AWW- 1 Anganwadi worker - 1 Helper

Requirements Age : 18-35 years Minimal Educational qualification: 10 th std. Honorarium: 4500 +500 From a Local village & community Preferably married

Beneficiaries Children age group 0-6 years Pregnant women Lactating women Adolescent girls Women of Reproductive age group (15-49 years )

Services The ICDS Scheme offers a package of six services, viz . Supplementary Nutrition Pre-school non-formal education Nutrition & health education Immunization Health check-up and Referral services
