While many have probably not heard the term “Angular Cheilitis”, they
have most likely experienced or seen someone who has it. The condition
is common in all age groups and can be caused by a wide variety of
factors.
Furthermore, Angular Cheilitis Symptoms can be quite easy to
identify. For the average person with no medical knowledge, there are
plenty of signs and symptoms to look out for when attempting to
diagnose Angular Cheilitis.
The following are the signs and symptoms
of Angular Cheilitis:
Skin discoloration (most often red)
Inflammation
Extremely chapped lips
Pain or at least one side of the mouth
Cracking at the corners of the mouth
Blistering
Lesions
Skin dryness
Irritation (which can include both pain and itching)
Diagnosis
Keeping these factors in mind, people can easily identify Angular Cheilitis without seeking medical expertise.
Most often, this is acceptable, since the condition is rarely serious and often very easy to treat.
However, some may opt to seek medical advice. In this case, many physicians will want to perform a culture
test. These can help to identify bacterial, viral, and fungal infections often associated with the condition.
More specifically, the culture test(s) performed can detect microbial strains of Staphylococcus aureus,
Candida albicans, and Herpes simplex involved in Angular Cheilitis development.
Mistaken Identity
Without medical expertise, the average person may confuse Angular Cheilitis and other medical conditions.
Some of these include;
Cold sores
Herpes
Fever blisters
Mouth ulcers
Severly chapped lips
How does one tell the difference, then? Well, it does have its own set of symptoms that are unique and do
not fit the description of these other conditions. Some key differences include;
Time length- it tends to last much longer than some of these other conditions, such as cold sores.
Locations of sores and cracking differ.
Beginning and development differ.
Only occurs on the outside of the mouth.
Certain conditions affect specific age groups more often. For example, it is more often seen in the older
population.
Causes (especially weather conditions) differ. For instance, chapped lips typically only occur in dry regions,
whereas Angular Cheilitis can develop for a variety of reasons, despite the weather.
So once again, Angular Cheilitis is a unique medical condition, which can make it easy to identify and treat.
