Animal Testing
By Cathy

I believe…
animal testing should not be allowed
because it’s cruel to the animals and they
should not have to go through it.

What is Animal Testing?
The use of non-human animals in research
and development projects, especially for
purposes of determining the safety of
substances such as foods or drugs.

How Would You Feel?
•What if this was your
pet dog?
•Or your cat, or one of
your pets?
•Just because they
don’t talk, doesn’t
mean that they do not
feel pain or get hurt

Sacred Animals

What kinds of animals do they
test on?
•Rats
•Mice
•Guinea pigs
•Cats
•Dogs
•Non-human Primates
•Rabbits
•Farm Animals

Types of Tests
•The Draize Eye Test
•Dermal Toxicity Test
•Lethal Dose Tests

How many animals die?
•10 million animals are killed each year
•8 million animals suffer

What do the animals go
through?
•poisoned, burned,
scalded, irradiated,
genetically
manipulated,
physically injured,
inflicted with deadly
diseases and
surgically mutilated.

Reasons For Animal Testing
•Helps figure out ways for new things
•Could come in handy when finding out
new vaccinates

Similarities: Humans & Lab
Animals
•Behavior can be just as complex
•Cellular structures, proteins, and
genes of humans and animals are
similar

Difference: Humans are not Lab
Animals
•Reaction to environment
•Also the conditions the animals are kept
•Respond differently to substances then
humans
•Effects on animals can be differ from each
laboratory

Alternatives to Animal Testing
•Episkin-a reconstructed human in vitro epidermis for evaluation of
cosmetics, pharmaceutical and chemical compounds.
•Epiocular-a reproducible, multi-layered human cell-derived tissue
for testing ocular irritancy of chemicals and other materials.
•Epiderm-is a reproducible, three-dimensional, human cell-derived
skin tissue for studies of corrosives and irritants.

Organizations against animal
testing
•AWA
•Only federal law
•Doesn’t count for
birds, rats and mice

Does any animal testing count
for cruelty?
•People will go undercover and see if they
are treating the animals right in
laboratories.
•In some cases they will find animals being
locked up and not treated as they should
be

Animal Cruelty
•There is many different types of animal
cruelty
•Animals for Entertainment
•Animal Experiments
•Factory Farming
•Fur Farms
•Hunting

Tale of Change
•Shepherd Mix
•No home
•Put there to have tests done on him

Chimps are being saved?
•The Great Ape Protection
Act
•Saves 1,200 chimpanzees
•Retires about 600 owned
chimps from laboratories
•supported by The
Humane Society of the
United States and NEAVS
