Content - 1.defination of antacid 2.characteristics of antacid 3.information- A. ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE GEL B.ALUMINIUM PHOSPHATE C.CALCIUM CARBONATE
1.DEFINATION - An antacid is a substance which neutralizes stomach acidity and is used to relieve heartburn, indigestion or an upset stomach. They come as a liquid or chewable tablets and can be bought from pharmacies and shops without a prescription.
2.characteristics of antacid 1.It should not be absorbed in systemic circulation . 2.it should not cause systemic alkalosis. 3.it should inhibit pepsin. 4.it should be palatable and inexpensive. 5.it should produce rapid and long lasting effect. 6.it should neither be a constipative nor laxative.
3.Information a. aluminium hydroxide gel – molecular formula- Al(OH)3, M.WT -78. IT IS A HYBRATE SUSPENSION OF ALUMINIUM OXIDE WITH VARIABLE AMOUNTS OF BASIC ALUMINIUM CARBONATE.IT CONTAIN NOT LESS THAN 3.5% AND NOT MORE THAN 4.4%W/W Al 2 O 3. PREPARATION- IT IS PREPARED BY ADDITION OF HOT SOLUTION OF POTASH ALUM TO HOT SOLUTION OF SODIUM CARBONATE. 3Na2CO3+ KAl (SO₄) ₂+ 3H2O - -> 3Na2 SO₄+K2 SO ₄+3CO2+2AI(OH)3 APPLICATIONS- 1.USED AS SLOW ACTING ANTACID TO TREAT HYPERACIDITY. 2.EFFECTIVE FOR USE IN TREATMENTS OF ULCERS AND HYPERCHLORHYDRIA.
DOSE- AROUND 7.5 ML, 4-6 TIMES A DAY. THIS 7.5 ML TO 15 ML AMOUNTS TO APPROXIMATELY 150-300 MG OF ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE. SOME MARKETED PREPARATION-
b.Aluminium phosphate – molecular formula-aipo4,m.wt. 122 it consists mainly of about 80% of hydrate aluminium orthophosphate. Preparation- by interaction between aqueous aluminium chloride and sodium phosphate . AlCl3+ Na3PO4 --> Alpo4+3nacl application- used as a mild acting antacid having half the acid neutralizing capacity of aluminium hydroxide gel.
Dose- 5-15 ml ( 1 teaspoonful to 1 tablespoonful ) SOME MARKETED PREPARATION-
c. Calcium carbonate- also called as precipitated chalk. Molecular formula-caco3, m.wt - 100.09 it contain not less than 98% and not more than 100.5% caco3 calculated on dried basis . Preparation- 1.prepared by mixing solutions of calcium chloride and sodium carbonate . Cacl2+na2co3 --> caco3+ 2 nacl 2.it can also be prepared by passing carbon dioxide through lime water. Cao+co2 --> caco3
Application- 1. used as a fast acting non-systemic anatacid . 2.As a supplement for calcium deficiency. 3.As dentrifies due to mild abrasive property and in cosmetics. SOME MARKETED PREPARATION-
