Introduction of Anti-Dysenteric Drugs Anti-dysenteric drugs are the agents used to treat dysentery, a condition characterized by inflammation of the intestine, especially the colon, resulting in severe diarrhea with mucus and blood. Definition: Dysentery is an inflammatory disease of the intestine, mainly caused by bacterial or amoebic infection, leading to abdominal pain, fever, and bloody diarrhea.

Ipecacuanha: Synonyms: Brazilian Ipecacuanha, Rio Ipecacuanha, Cephaelis ipecacuanha Root, Ipecac Root Rasagenthi , Brazil Biological Source: Ipecacuanha consists of the dried roots and rhizomes of Cephaelis ipecacuanha and Psychotria ipecacuanhav ( सेफ़ेलिस इपेकाकुन्हा और साइकोट्रिया इपेकाकुन्हा ) Family: Rubiaceae .

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Colour : Externally grayish-brown to dark brown and Internally yellowish-white. Odour : characteristic. Taste: Bitter Size: Length: 5–15 cm &Thickness: 3–6 mm CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS Alkaloids (2–3%) – mainly Emetine and Cephaeline Glycosides Tannins Resins

THERAPEUTIC USES: Anti-dysenteric: Used in amoebic dysentery treatment (in small doses). Expectorant: In low doses, promotes secretion from the respiratory tract. Emetic: In large doses, induces vomiting (used in poisoning cases).

Introduction of Oxytocic Oxytocic drugs are the agents that stimulate contraction of the uterus (womb), especially to induce or accelerate labor, control postpartum bleeding, or assist in expulsion of the placenta. ERGOT Synonyms: Ergot of Rye, Secale cornutum Biological Source: Ergot consists of the dried sclerotium of the fungus Claviceps purpurea (Fries) Tul. ( क्लैविसेप्स पुरपुरिया (फ्राइज़) तुल., ) Family: Clavicipitaceae ( क्लैविसिपिटेसी )

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Colour : Dark purplish-black or violet-brown. Odour : characteristic Taste: Slightly bitter and disagreeable. Size: Length: 1–3 cm Thickness: 2–6 mm CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Alkaloids (0.1–0.5%) – the active principles Ergometrine (Ergonovine) Ergotamine Ergosine , Ergocristine , Ergocryptine Other constituents: Fixed oil (about 30%) Mannitol Pigments and sterols

USES / THERAPEUTIC It is used as Oxytocic In high doses, may induce abortion (hence used with caution). Ergotamine is used for acute migraine attacks. Constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure.
