Prescription Drug Prescribed by a doctor Only intended for the prescribed person Purchased at a pharmacy Approved by the fda (food and drug administration) to ensure safety and effectiveness of the drug Can be addictive Should not be confused with an otc (over the counter) drug
Commonly abused prescription drugs Opioids- Pain relievers Central nervous system depressants- used to treat anxiety like Xanax , and valium Stimulants to treat attention deficit disorder like Adderall , Methylene
Over the counter drugs Do not require a doctors prescription Bought off the shelf in stores Can be addictive Side effects are less harmful than prescription drugs
Commonly abused otc drugs Dextromethorphan is an ingredient in cough syrup, like nyquil . Large doses can cause hallucinations Pain relievers like ibuprofen are taken more than prescribed amount to “work faster” and used more often for minor pain Caffeine drinks like 5 hour energy , can be addictive to function in a fast environment. Can also cause heart irregularities, and liver problems.
Amoxil Antibiotic Generic name is amoxicillin Treats bacterial infection Stops the process of bacteria making cell walls Side effects are rashes, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea
Zymine Is an antihistamine Syrup Reduces symptom of allergy attack, blocks histamine Also can treat the common cold Can be taken with or without food Must take prescribed amount
Zymine There are many side effects when taking zymine : Dizziness Drowsiness Dry mouth and nose Excitability Thickening of mucus in throat
Solotuss Antitussive Relieves cough, flu, and hay fever Cough suppressant that works with brain to decrease cough reflex Can not be taken if patient is breastfeeding Can not be taken if the patient is a newborn
Solotuss Symptoms from taking solotuss : Confusion Hallucinations Headaches Severe drowsiness Tightness in chest Swelling of lips or face Rash Difficulty breathing
Conclusion Prescription drugs are for severe cases because of their high potency Over the counter drugs are available mostly anywhere for mild cases, and problems Both prescription and over the counter drugs can be addictive Prescription drugs are more addictive, and have many side effects Antibiotic is to fight bacteria Antihistamine is to treat allergic reactions Antitussive is to treat cough symptoms
