Definition Antidote – “Antidote are the drugs which are used in the treatment of poisoning ” Poisoning – Poisoning means entry of poison inside the body. Poison – It is defined as any substance administered by any route of administration produces ill health, disease or death.

Classification Classification based on mechanism of action 1. Physiological antidote e.g – Sodium nitrite 2. Chemical antidote e.g – Sodium thiosulphate 3. Mechanical antidote e.g – Activated charcoal
Mechanism of action 1. Physiological antidote :- They act by producing opposite effect to that of poison.
Mechanism of action 2. Chemical antidote :- They act by combining with poison & changes chemical nature of poison.
Mechanism of action 3. Mechanical antidote :- They act by preventing absorption of poison into the body.
