CONTENT What is optical fiber? Structure of optical fiber? Raw materials? Classification of optical fiber? Application of optical fiber? Advantage & disadvantage of optical fiber? Conclusion?

WHAT IS OPTICAL FIBER An optical fiber is a hair thin cylindrical fiber of glass or any transparent dielectric medium. The fiber which are used for optical communication are wave guides made of transparent dielectrics. Its function is to guide visible and infrared light over long distance.

STRUCTURE OF OPTICAL FIBER Core – central tube of very thin size made up of optically transparent dielectric medium and carries the light from transmitter to receiver. The core diameter can vary from about 5um to 100um. Cladding – outer optical material surrounding the core having reflecting index lower than core. It helps to keep the blight within the core throughout the phenomena of total internal reflection. Coating- The coating protects the glass fiber from mechanical and environmental stresses in application. The primary coating may be applied in a single or dual layer.

RAW MATERIALS Silicon dioxide (Si02) Silica powder Liquid silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) Germanium tetrachloride (GeC14) Phosphorus ox chloride (PoCI3)

CLASSIFICATION OF OPTICAL FIBER Based on number of mode :- Single mode optical fiber 2. Multi mode optical fiber Single Mode: In this mode only one mode can propagate through the fiber This fiber has small core diameter (8-12um) and high cladding diameter(125um) That is used to transmit over longer distance Multi Mode : It allows larges no of mode for the light ray travelling through it. The core diameter is (40um) and cladding is (70um) It used to transmit across comparatively shorter distance. It can carry multiple light rays.

APPLICATION OF OPTICAL FIBER Networking Telecommunication Defense Medical Data storage Industrial/commercial Broadcast/CATV

ADVANTAGE OF OPTICAL FIBER:- The life of fiber is longer than copper wire Handling and installation cost of optical fiber is very nominal It is unaffected with electromagnetic interfurioence DISADVANTAGE OF OPTICAL FIBER:- Only point to point working is possible on optical fiber. The maintenance is very costly and highly skilled staff would be required for maintenance. Accept unipollar codes only.

CONCLUSION This concludes Our study of optical fiber communication have looked at how they work and how they are made .we have examined the properties of fiber , and how fibers are joined together although this presentation does not cover all the aspects of optical fiber work it will have equipped you knowledge and skills essential to the fiber optic industry.
