Apomixis and its Application in Horticulture Presented By: Md. Nazibullah Reg no. 14-05-3221 MS Program Department of Horticulture Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University
Presentation Outline Introduction Objectives Materials and Methods Results and Discussion Conclusion
Introduction Apomixis , derived from two Greek word "APO" (away from) and " mixis " (act of mixing or mingling). Apomixisis a type of reproduction in which sexual organs of related structures take part but seeds are formed without union of gametes. The first discovery of this phenomenon is credited to Leuwenhock as early as 1719 in Citrus seeds
Objectives To know about apomixis and its types, oppurtunities and its application in horticulture
Materials and Methods A Review Paper Informations were collected from Journal Publications & Internet browsing Suggestions and valuable information Compiled and arranged chronologically
Results & Discussion : Apomixis is asexual seed formation Sexual Apomict Progeny genotype same as female parent
Apomixis is significant in horticulture because the seedling plants have the same genotype. Citrus is a noted example of apomixis . The most important use of apomictic seedlings is for rootstocks because of their vigor, lack of viruses, and uniformity.

Advantages of apomixis
Apomixis is not prevalent in crops:
Oppurtunities in Apomixis technology in Horticulture:
The Plan: Use natural apomicts to identify apomixis genes & examine function. Tools to switch apomixis and sex on and off. Synthesis in eudicot crops ( eg Canola, lettuce……..)
Conclusion Much work is being done in the world towards developing new improved ornamental plants from seeds. Many of the new varieties are hybrids.Cloning by seeds can be a tool for their breeding, eliminating segregation in the progeny. This practice can become available as a result of advances in apomixis research . Incorporating genes for apomixis can also contribute to developing new cultivars from varieties that are locally adapted, increasing the diversity of ornamental plants .
Though numerous questions about gene action, function and regulation of apomixis still remain to be answered, a promising scenario is open for the near future. Many of the results obtained so far have already contributed to the breeding of apomictic species, many of which are important natural resources, and will contribute to programs aiming at the generation of improved and asexually seed-propagating crops.
