LETTER OF APPLICATION An application letter is the one that seeks a job position. It is a sales letter in the sense that it sells your services to your prospective employer. The application letter is composed of two parts: The cover letter of the application letters itself The resumé, which is an enclosure
Application Letter / Cover Letter The application letter itself, may be solicited. This means that you are responding to an advertisement for a vacant position that needs to be filled. The solicited letter should indicate in the first paragraph the source and the date of the advertisement as well as the vacant position applied for.
When the letter is unsolicited, you are only prospecting for a job. You are only taking chances if your qualifications might fit the vacancy, should there be one in the company. You need not cite any source of information regarding the vacant position.
Parts of the Application/Cover Letter: The parts of the application or cover letter serve as your guide in writing the letter. Opening paragraph - (Orientation part) State the position you are applying
for and indicate that the letter is solicited by giving the source and the date when the newspaper advertisement appeared. If a person has suggested that you apply for a particular position, you may cite the name of that person in the opening paragraph. If, however, the letter is unsolicited, simply express your interest in offering your services should there be a vacant position.
2. Middle paragraph - (information part) indicate your qualifications in relation to the position you are applying for and what you can do for the company. Highlight your overall education by showing how your studies prepared you for the work you seek. Explain how and why you supplemented your major field. Also mention the job you have handled, if any, full time or part time. If you have
had little job or no job experience, then mention that you have the ability to work with people; that you have great interest in the field you are applying for; and that the mentioned activities related to the job may be your selling points. 3. Last paragraph- (Action part) Request an action. Without begging or commanding, ask for an interview at a
time convenient for the employer. Suggest contact numbers for keeping in touch.

Resumé The resumé is the second part of an application letter. It is the enclosure of the cover letter, the application letter itself. Actually, the resumé is the summary of your personal information as an applicant. It is a concise picture of what you have accomplished: your education, work experience, and activities that will be presented to your
prospective employer (Murphy & Hilderbrant , 2013). Before writing the cover letter, prepare the resumé first because it is the basis of your letter. The information in the resumé must be presented with headings in phrases, instead of full sentences. Positive qualifications must be emphasized, and job-related strengths must be presented. There is no definite order in the sequencing of items in the resumé, but
you should present first what the job demands. Doing so represents the functional or reverse chronological is seldom used now.
