1. ASSIGNMENT OF BUSINESS STRATEGIC ON APSRTC


History of APSRTC
The origin of APSRTC dates back to June1932, when it was first established as NSR-RTD
(Nazism State Rail & Road Transport Department), a wing of Nazism State Railway in the
erstwhile Hyderabad State, with 27 buses and 166 employees. During the past 77 years, it has
registered a steady growth from 27 to 22,459 buses with 778 bus stations, 216 Depots and 1,
881 bus shelters.
The Corporation's buses cover 80.24 lakhs KMs. and carry 153.63 lakhs people to their
destinations every day. They connect 23,388/5010 villages to all major towns and cities in
A.P which constitutes 95% of Road Transport. APSRTC operates to City and Mofussil areas.
The Corporation's buses also ply to important towns and cities in the neighbouring States of
Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The entire network is under the administrative control of 23 Regional Managers in 7 Zones.
Zonal Head Quarters are at Hyderabad. APSRTC under the present name was established on
11th January 1958 in pursuance of the Road Transport Corporations Act 1950.

APSRTC is committed to provide consistently high quality of services and to
continuously improve the services through a process of teamwork for the utmost satisfaction
of the passengers and to attain a position of pre-eminence in the Bus Transport sector.

2. Type of Services
City buses
Initially the city buses very primarily called ordinary buses with green and dark green shades.
They were supplemented with few double-decker buses in the same colour scheme. But in the
year 2003 the corporation has decided to withdraw double-deckers because of the operational
difficulties. The colour scheme of the ordinary city buses has also been changed to white and
orange gradually from the year 2002.
In the year 1994 a new kind of buses with dark blue and white colour scheme called the
Metro liners were introduced in Hyderabad similar kind were introduced in Visakhapatnam
under the name of City Liners these were instant hit but the passengers had to pay higher for
the services which had fewer stops. APSRTC then introduced Metro Express buses whose
charges were in between that of the ordinary and the Metro liners. In the year 2002 when the
National games were held in the city of Hyderabad the APSRTC complimented the
Hyderabad's successful organisation by providing a new Yellow coloured bus for transporting
the participants/organizers between the venues and places of stay. These buses were named
Veera who was the mascot for the 2002 National Games. Veera is based on Ongole Bull.
After 2002 National Games Veera buses are used for Hyderabad Local Transport.
Then came few AC buses called SeethalaHamsa's .But the city regions got a big boost with
the coverage of Urban transportation under the JNNURM scheme in which the Union
Government funds the purchase of buses to be used for improving urban transport. APSRTC
has got more than 2000 buses sanctioned under this scheme. Out of these buses 1000 were
sanctioned to Hyderabad city region in which 750 were Semi Low Floor(SLF, Ashok
Leyland and TATA motors make), 200 Low Floor buses(TATA Marco polo) and 50 AC Low
Floor buses(8 Volvo and remaining Tata Marco polo).From 2009 end the JNNURM Metro
Expresses with a distinct blue and white colour scheme having LED electronic display boards
are prominently seen on the roads of twin cities, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. It has also
introduced CNG buses in some cities viz. Vijayawada and will soon introduce in other major

Current services
Unlike the past there is less standardisation in the body structure or the colour
scheme of a particular kind of Buses even leading to confusion among the
passengers in identifying them.

Can be considered the new avatar of the old Red Bus. The colour scheme is
predominantly Dark Green over White. Usually connects the villages to nearby
towns.
EXPRESS
Similar to the Express service before but in new White and Sky Blue Stripes.

SAPTHAGIRI
These buses in Blue and White colours are seen in the holy towns of Tirupathi and Tirumala
for the benefit of pilgrims visiting the Lord Venkateshwara Swami temple in Tirumala.
Majority of buses ply between Tirupathi and Tirumala and are Ghats eligible. Some of these
buses connect Tirumala directly with Chennai, Bangalore and Chittoor.

Previously known Luxury buses have been named as Deluxe. Can be seen in different colour
patterns but mostly in Purple and white combination.

SUPER LUXURY
Most popular non-AC service between towns and cities and vice versa. Usually in a single
predominant colour with black windows. The colour is usually Pink, light Green, Blue,
Orange.

INDRA A/C [ASHOK LEYLAND]
APSRTC has introduced 155 air-conditioned Leyland vehicles christened ‘Indra' for people
who wish to travel air-conditioned buses at affordable fares. To begin with, these buses
would be run on Hyderabad-Vijayawada, Hyderabad-Ongole, Hyderabad-Kakinada,
Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad-Nellore, Naziabad-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Kadapa
and other routes.

When the Swedish Auto major Volvo entered the South Indian Market with its B7R (Volvo
9400) buses APSRTC was among the few operators who have brought the Volvo B7R buses.
They have named the bus Services as Garuda. These buses are very fast, comfortable and
safe. People have patronized these services even at a higher ticket costs. APSRTC is
operating Garuda between major cities in the state like Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam,
Naziabad, and Vijayawada and to cities in the neighbouring states like Bangalore, Mumbai.
Now the enhanced version B9R, Multivalve with more seating capacity is to come with
advanced features. Along with Volvo, APSRTC also operates with Cerita, ISUZU coaches in
specific zones.

5. OBJECTIVE OF THE APSRTC
The activities at APSRTC are functioning on the hardware and the technologies computerized
in 1988. And most of the IT projects are developed using SCO open server 5.0.X, ORACLE
(Version 7.1.6) and RM-COBOL etc. Hence the need was realized to migrate and integrate
all the existing IT related Projects to the latest technologies with a centralized database and
application duly networking all the sites / Units. Centralization will also facilitate in
managing independent data maintained at distributed databases. Further, the migration to
latest technology would help APSRTC to overcome following weaknesses:
• Obsolete technology: Migration will facilitate to overcome current system’s inability to
operate on the latest technology,
• Security: Latest technology will enable better security of data and information by
centralizing the data storage location.
• Redundancy: Redundancy and duplication of the data can be achieved with integration of
various applications. In addition, centralization of systems would help in attaining efficiency
and better quality of data through the following:
• Data Integrity: Data integrity can be attained within and between all these systems through
centralized data management avoiding duplication of data and enabling data integrity since
data would be maintained at a single site.
• Easy Data Management: Centralization would help in easier and cost effective management
of large amount of data.
• Sustained Application: Centralized application would ensure control on the existing
application by avoiding multiple versions at different locations. Also any application change
will be validated across all the sites in the organization.
• Optimum Manpower utilization: The available man power will be optimally utilized at a
central location, concentrating on the major issues at a single site. No local IT support may be
required at sites.
• Data Availability: Access to real time information and desired MIS reports can be extracted
from centralized system, providing up-to-date and accurate data for reporting, analysis and
decision making.
• Standardization: Standardized formats and forms will be built into the new system for easy
user operations. Codes across systems that are currently not uniform and lead to manual
effort would be standardized after the integrated solution implementation.

INTRODUCTION

About Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation
Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (herein after referred to as “APSRTC” or
“Corporation”) is a leading road transport corporation in Andhra Pradesh, India. It was
established by Government of Andhra Pradesh on 11th January 1958 in pursuance of the
Road
Transport Corporations Act, 1950. It provides road transport facilities for inter as well as intra

7. state travel.
On an average, APSRTC transports about 14 million passengers every day, equaling the
number
of passengers ferried by Indian Railways. It is the world's largest public transport
organizations
by bus fleet offering a wide transportation services in the Southern states of India. APSRTC
operates across the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Pondicherry,
Maharashtra, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Goa. Currently, the Corporation is operating with
21,439 buses from 210 depots and cover 767 Bus stations. These buses cover 75.51 lakh
Kilometres and almost 14.5 million people every day.

APSRTC ORGANIZATION
APSRTC is organized into four tiers comprising of Head Office at Hyderabad, Zones at
seven
locations, 23 Regions and 210 Depots. Each depot is attached to one zone and all zones report
to
the Head Office. Each zone has a workshop to cater to the maintenance needs to depots and a
store to cater to the requirements of material requirements of these workshops and depots.
Organizationally, the corporation is headed by the Chairman and supported by Vice –
Chairman
and Managing Director. Each of the zones is headed by an Executive Director. In addition,
there
are 23 regional offices that cater to the administrative requirements of the depots. Each of the
regions is headed by a Regional Manager. APSRTC also have one Body building workshop
and
one printing press to support its operations.

Key Achievements of APSRTC
The major achievements of the Corporation are:
• It has entered into the Guinness Book of World Records on 31/10/1999, with 18,397 buses
making it the largest bus fleet in the world
• APSRTC was honoured with the ‘Road Safety award’ by United Kingdom based ‘Chartered
Institute of Transport’

8. • ‘Productivity and Fuel Efficiency Award’ from Government of India is been given to
APSRTC for many consecutive years
Expected role of System Integrator

In brief, the system integrator should study the existing systems/projects and deliver the
functional and technical requirements as provided in Request for Proposal (RFP), develop
the solution (configuration of existing features and development of customized
components), perform unit integration and system testing, perform user acceptance testing,
conduct a pilot implementation based on the pilot implementation plan and deploy the
solution across all APSRTC Units.
The System Integrator (SI) would be responsible for supplying necessary hardware,
Licenses, connectivity in the name of APSRTC and implement an enterprise network
covering LAN, WAN, IBW and all network components. The SI must deploy the required
Hardware and networking equipment, Setup the Data Centre and Disaster Recovery (DR)
Centre, deploy suitable Operating Systems, Application packages like RDBMS, application
development tools etc.
In addition, the system integrator is also expected to provide interfaces between the
proposed solution and the existing systems in use such as – Ticket Issuing Machines, Online
Passenger Reservation System, Pass Automation and Accountal System and Intelligent
Transport System for Buses. SI is also expected to train, involve and utilise the IT team
during the project and conduct train the trainer programme for the end users of APSRTC as
per the Training Plan (to be provided in the RFP).
In Phase - I, the SI would study the existing systems, infrastructure, processes and
documentation and prepare functional and technical requirements (for total solution
covering systems, architecture, hardware, networking equipment, networking (LAN &
WAN) solution, internet bandwidth, data centre, DR Centre etc.
