When he took office in January 1989, Precinct Three had only 10 parks. By working with the community and aggressively advocating for a better
quality of life, Steve has increased the number of parks in the precinct to more than 62. Precinct Three maintains about 15,000 acres of park land.
Some of those facilities are dog parks – among the first in the nation. There is also an environmentally-friendly network of hike, bike, and walking
trails that covers dozens of miles in the precinct. When Steve took office in 1989, trail mileage in Precinct Three was 17 miles.
Community centers have also been expanded and two high-tech education facilities for seniors were built with the help of federal grant funds.
Under Steve’s leadership, recreational facilities were also modernized, ties to the community were strengthened through dealings with local youth
sports leagues and problems like childhood obesity have been tackled through the construction of unique public-private "Kid Fit" parks aimed at
giving families places to stay fit together.
Steve has also worked hard to meet the infrastructure and transportation needs of Precinct Three, which encompasses more than 450 square
miles and is one of the fastest growing and most diverse areas in the region. The precinct contains both large segments of rural agricultural land
and densely populated urban areas. Steve has kept pace with immense population growth in the precinct by continually participating in regional
transportation initiatives aimed at bettering mobility.
Steve and his wife, Sherry, who serves as Chief Justice of the Texas First Court of Appeals, have four sons. They attend St. John Vianney Catholic
Church.
