Introduction:- Tea is one of the most popular & widely consumed drink worldwide.It’s commonly prepared by pouring boiling water over the cured leaves of the tea plant. The scientific name of Tea is Camellia Spp. Tea was originated in Yunnan, China during Shang dynasty as a medicinal drink.The British introduced tea in india.And now the Indian tea industry is about 172 years old. Tea ia the country’s primary beverage, with almost 85% of total households in the country consuming tea.
Tea industry in India:- India is the second largest producer of tea in the world.India accounts for about 23% of world tea production. In India, tea cultivation on commercial scale was first started in Assam in 1839 by the British.Later it was extended to other parts of the country. However,due to certain specific soil & climatic requirements its cultivation was confined to only certain parts of the country. Major tea producing states in the country are Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu & Kerala.
75 % of the total tea produced in India is accounted by Assam & West Bengal together. India accounts for about 12-13% of world tea exports. Some of world’s finest teas are produced in India like Assam tea, Nilgiri tea & Darjeeling tea. Tea industry is one of the oldest agro based industries in India. More than a million workers gets direct employment from this industry, among which a sizable number of workers are women.
Area Production & Productivity of Tea The total turnover of the tea industry in India is around Rs.10,000 crores.Since independence the tea production has grown over 250%, while land area has just increased by 40%. There has been a considerable increase in export too in the recent years. The total net foreign exchange per annum is around Rs.1847 crores.
The Indian tea industry is having 1692 registered tea manufacturers, 2200 registered tea exporters & 5548 registered tea buyers. a)Area, Production & Productivity of Tea – India India,the second largest producer of tea & is also the world’s largest consumer of black tea. In all the domestic market consuming 973 million kg of tea during 2016-17. The production of tea reached 1,325 million kg in 2017-18 & the total area of cultivation of tea in India was about 566.55 thousand hectares.

Production of Tea in India:- Therefore, tea production in india is lead by Assam,West Bengal, Tamilnadu & Kerala. According to estimates the tea industry is India’s second-largest employer. It employs over 3.5 million peopleacross some 1686 estates & 1,57,594 smallholdings; most of them women. India accounts for about 23% of total global production of tea, with about three-fourths of the country’s total produce consumed locally. Assam is the leading tea producing state.

Conclusion:- The review of the Indian scenario of tea in terms of area, production, productivity indicated overall increase in the quantity of tea . Presently, India is the second largest producer of tea in the world, and second largest consumer in the world. The Tea plantation belt of India includes Assam, West Bengal, Tamilnadu,Kerala and Karnataka.
