The universe is made of tiny, identical strings:
The diversity of observed particles comes from
the infinite number of different ways a string
can vibrate. (Harmony of the Strings)
The History of String Theory
A beautiful idea in search of a meaning
e Origin: try to explain the strong nuclear force
> At first, didn't even realize the theory described strings
e The theory didn’t work
+ Failed to match further experiments (no quarks)
>» Always included a “spin 2” particle not seen in nuclei
e New insight: “spin 2” particles are gravitons!
» Now recognized as a quantum theory with gravity
@ Since then: many years of refining the theory
- Work toward self-consistency and uniqueness
In String Theory, Particles are Strings

How can they carry energy?
eMass (energy) per unit length
» Natural length zero
«Overall momentum
eVibrations along the string

» Left & right movers = independent
* Infinitely many hannonic modes

Characteristics of the strings
In a guitar string, the different notes that sound when the
string is plucked are a result of the properties of the string:
tension, length, thickness.
The notes coming out of the guitar are excitation modes of
the string.
The particles that are observed in particle accelerators can be
thought of as musical notes, or excitations modes of strings.
Different excitation modes make the strings appear as
electrons, photons, and so on.
Strings have a miniscule length that is known as the Planck
length. The Planck length is about 10°73 centimeters
Levels of magnification:
1. Macroscopic level - Matter
2. Molecular level
3. Atomic level -
Protons, neutrons, and electrons
4. Subatomic level - Electron
5. Subatomic level - Quarks
6. String level
String Theory
Generalization of quantum field
theory. Hot topic of last 20 years
Objects are not “points” but “Loops”
Particles are “vibrations” of the
loops like tones on a guitar string.
One of the modes is a graviton that
causes gravity
Open strings are photons.
Space time is in 10 dimensions.
What happened to the other 4?
Compactified so we cannot see
them now.
Latest version is M-theory in 11
dimensions. Can contain “branes”:
(membranes): generalizations of
strings to higher dimensions.
More complicated, so fewer results
THE GREAT THING ABOUT
STRING THEORY IS THAT IT TIES

STRING THEORY
Fact 319
According to the myth, the gods tie an
invisible red string around the little finger
of people who are destined to be soul
mates and will one day marry each other.
It can get twisted and knotted..but it will
never be broken.
