Functions and Philosophical Perspectives on Art (Part 1) Personal Functions of Art >The personal functions of art are varied and highly subjective. This means that the functions depend on the artist. The artist may create an art out of the need for self-expression (to communicate/entertain). Sometimes the artist may not even to intend to mean anything with his work.

An art may be therapeutic. It is used to help residents process their emotions or while away their time. This is common in orphanages, half-way homes and homes for the aged.

Social Functions of Art Art is considered to have a social function if and when it addresses a particular collective interest as opposed to a personal interest. Political Art is a very common example of an art with a social function. Art may convey a message if protest, contestation, or whatever message the artist intends his work to carry on

Art can depict existing social conditions. Paintings, drawings, dramas, skits and novels with themes on social justice and freedom serve as educational tools to awaken and mobilize people to struggle for social change.

Physical Functions of Art > The physical functions of art can be found in artworks that are crafted in order to serve some physical purpose. Architecture, jewelry-making, pottery- making, and even interior design are forms of art that have a physical function.

Other Functions of Art Music. Music in its original form was principally functional. It was used for dance and religion. Music today serves as a means of expressing emotions, as an accompaniment to stage plays and movies. Sculpture. Just like music in the early times, this have been made mostly for religious purposes. People erect statues as objects of worship.

Sculptures were also made in order to commemorate important figures in history in monuments and busts. Architecture. This might be the most prominent functional art form. Buildings are huge, expensive, and are not easily constructed and replaced. It is also in architecture where one can find the intimate connection of function and form.

In planning out an architectural structure, one has to seriously consider the natural conditions like topography and climate of the place of erection and of the social conditions such as the purpose of the building itself.
