Definition of arthritis Arthritis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation and stiffness of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. There are different types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most common forms.

Types of arthritis There are several types of arthritis, each with its own characteristics and causes. Here are some of the main types: 1 osteoarthritis This is the most common type of arthritis, often related to aging or wear-and-tear on joints. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time. 2 rheumatoid arthritis RA is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium (the lining of the membranes that surround joints), causing inflammation. It can lead to joint damage and deformity.

Cont.. 3 Psoriatic arthritis This type of arthritis occurs in some people with psoriasis, a skin condition. It can affect the joints as well as cause inflammation in other parts of the body. 4 Gout Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden attacks of intense pain, swelling, and redness. It commonly affects the big toe but can occur in other joints as well.
