ROMAN THEATER

The theatre of ancient Rome started in the 3rd century BC. It had varied and interesting art forms, like festival performances of street theatre, acrobatics, the staging of comedies of Plautus, and the high-verbally elaborate tragedies of Seneca.

According to Roman history Livy, theater originated with Etruscan performers in the 4 th century BC. By 240 BC, Roman drama began of the plays of Livius Andronicus and had become popular, and 102 out of 176 ludi public games were devoted to theater.

One of the first permanent non-wooden theaters in Rome was the Triumvir Pompey, which was greatly influenced by Greek play. It was part of a multi-use complex with a large quadriporticus , elaborately decorated stage, porticos, garden, and art exposition room

THEATRE OF POMPEY

Roman theater plays often featured realistic violence, chariot races, gladiators, and public executions. Roman audiences enjoyed realistic spectacles, but Christians opposed barbaric themes, leading to theater closures. Comedy plays and women’s performances were popular from 350-250 B.C.E

ROMAN CHARIOTS

MEDIEVAL THEATER

During the Medieval era, theater performances were banned in Europe, leading to minstrels performing in public places and festivals, despite being viewed as dangerous and pagan.

Churches in Europe started staging their own theater performances during Easter Sundays with biblical stories and events. Eventually, some plays were brought outside the church due to their portrayal of the devil and hell An example of this kind of play is the “The Mystere d’Adam or The mystery of d’Adam ”. The story revolves on Adam and Eve and ends with the devil capturing and bringing them to hell.
