•437,000 African children died before their 5

birthday due to malaria
•achild dies every minute from malaria
•3.2 billion people are estimated to be at risk, of whom 1.2 billion are at high risk
How is it spread?
•malaria is caused by a single-
cell parasite from a genus
known as Plasmodium
•it is transmitted by Anopheles,
a genus of mosquito
•Anopheles mosquitoes breed in
water
Who is most at risk?
•young children
•non-immune pregnant women
•people with HIV/AIDS
•foreigners
•people returning home to a
high risk area
Preventions
•insecticide treated mosquito
bed nets
•indoor spraying with
insecticides
•antimalarial medicines can also
be used to prevent malaria
•However...
•in areas of high levels of
malaria transmission there is
insecticide resistance
•resistance to antimalarial
medicines is a recurring
problem
•10% of income spend on anti-
malaria drugs
•people refuse to use the nets
and don't repair them when
needed.
