Functions of the Philippine Congress

1. Lawmaking - Congress is responsible for drafting, debating, and passing laws. - This includes both national legislation and local laws that affect various sectors, such as education, health, and infrastructure.

2. Representation -Members of Congress represent the interests and concerns of their constituents. Senators and Representatives engage with the public to understand their needs and ensure these are considered in legislative decisions.

3. Oversight Congress monitors and evaluates the actions of the executive branch . This includes reviewing government spending, programs, and policies to ensure accountability and transparency.

4. Budget Approval : Congress has the power to approve the national budget proposed by the executive branch. This function is vital for determining how government resources are allocated across various sectors.

 5. Impeachment: The House of Representatives has the authority to initiate impeachment proceedings against high-ranking officials (e.g., the President, Supreme Court justices) for misconduct. The Senate conducts the trial for impeached officials.

6. Treaty Ratification: The Senate is responsible for ratifying treaties negotiated by the executive branch. This function ensures that international agreements align with national interests.

Structure and Functions of the Philippine Congress

The Philippine Congress is bicameral, consisting of two chambers:  1.Senate 2. House of Representative

1.Senate o Composition : Comprised of 24 senators elected for six-year terms. o Functions : Besides lawmaking, the Senate has specific responsibilities such as confirming presidential appointments and ratifying treaties. It also plays a significant role in national oversight.

 2.  House of Representatives: o Composition: Made up n ot more than two hundred and fifty members , including those elected from legislative districts and party-list representatives. oFunctions: The House initiates all revenue bills and plays a key role in lawmaking. It also handles impeachment proceedings.

Importance of the Philippine Congress

 The Philippine Congress is vital for several reasons: 

 1. Democratic Governance: Congress embodies the principles of democracy by representing the people's will and facilitating public participation in governance. It provides a platform for diverse voices and interests in society.
