ASSESSMENT IN READING

Topic 1.4 Assessing and Evaluating Reading Skills

Learning Outcomes By the end of the topic, you should be able to: 1. Explain some important principles of testing reading 2. Explain important elements in preparing reading tests; and 3. Explain the practical uses for scoring and feedback from reading tests

Assessments and evaluations are yardsticks or benchmarks that a teacher uses to measure the achievement and performance of a learner.

Principles of Testing Reading

Can you remember how you learned to read in English? What are the difficulties you encountered while learning to read in English?

Can you think of one reason why we need to test or evaluate one’s reading skill or ability?

3 elements related to testing reading principles to be discussed are : (1) Testing purpose; (2) Types of assessments; and (3) Testing reading approaches.

1. PURPOSE OF TESTING READING To check on learners’ reading progress and achievement levels; To gauge learners’ suitability for a particular reading task, text or level ;

To gauge learners’ abilities to cope with future reading demands; and To check on effectiveness of the reading tasks and procedures .

2. TYPES OF READING TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS Formal Tests Informal Tests or Continuous assessment

Formal Test are administered with the main intention to check, evaluate and improve the learners’ reading abilities and proficiencies .

Common Formal Reading Test Classified as; placement tests, progress tests, achievement tests, proficiency tests and diagnostic tests .

A. Placement Reading Test are designed to sort out learners into reading groups according to the level of reading ability.

B. Progress Reading Tests are designed to check on learners’ reading progress provide immediate feedback to the learner regarding how he or she is progressing

C. Reading Achievement Tests usually given at the end of a reading course or syllabus Grades serves as basis for the next course of action

D. Reading Proficiency Tests Used to gauge learners’ ability levels after a particular set of input or reading practice tests are more content or skills-specified rather than syllabus-based.

E. Diagnostic Reading Tests Used for the purpose of identifying reading problems and difficulties faced by learners.

Informal Reading Tests In simplest form, can be in-class reading exercises to be completed within a stipulated time . used to evaluate learners’ reading abilities and provide immediate feedback with regards to reading problems faced by learners

Informal Reading Tests A competent reader needs to master two important processes: He or she must be able to interpret the language in its written form. To do this, the reader must be able to recognize the letter or symbol that shapes the words of the written language; and

Informal Reading Tests Next , having identified these shapes and words, the reader must now interpret the meanings that these words represent and apply or present them in the form of meaningful phrases, sentences or paragraphs.

3. Testing Reading Approaches 2 types of tests used in assessing and evaluating each of the main language skills; 1. discrete feature tests and 2. holistic , task-based or integrative tests.

Discrete Reading Test usually on testing vocabulary primarily a test of recognition ability Recognition of words with similar or opposite meaning Speed recognition and visual discrimination Using contextual clues for vocabulary comprehension

Discrete Reading Test Examples The opposite of wide is _______ ; the synonym of courageous is ______ Identify whether the words are similar: form – from; phrase – phase After the football game the players left the __________(court, field) .

Holistic Reading Test attempts to test the readers’ skills in comprehending a reading passage or text through comprehension questions usually text or content-based and involves task application skills such as applying the knowledge gained from reading and comprehension of the text.

Preparing Reading Tests

Table of Reading Test Specification blue-print for test construction allows you to indicate the details of your reading test such as necessary subskills or subtests, test formats, topics, time allocation, number of items and marks allocation

Scoring and Feedback

Scoring and Feedback Main Useful functions: It is a formal benchmark to measure performance and achievement level of students ; and It provides feedback on the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process and sessions conducted by the teachers.
