ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a scholar of English language at the University of Oxford, is best known as the "father of modern fantasy literature". He was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. His father Arthur Tolkien, a bank clerk, went to South Africa with an ambition to seek promotion. His father died in 1896 and his family returned to the West Midlands (England) where ye attended Kind Edward's school .
ABOUT THE AUTHOR He was brought up as a Roman Catholic and he remained loyal to Catholicism throughout his life. After the death of his mother in 1904, he started living in a boarding house where he met his Edith Bratt . They got married in 1916 and the same year, he participated in WWI for a period of four months . In 1925, he joined University of Oxford as a Professor of Anglo-Saxon literature and later took the position of Professor of English Language and Literature.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR His first fantasy work "The Hobbit" was published in 1937 and it became an immediate success . On the request of publishers, Tolkien wrote a sequel of "The Hobbit" which was published under the name of "The Lord of the Rings ". Tolkien retired in 1959 and moved to Bournemouth to live a peaceful life away from public attention . He died in 1973 and was buried in the northern suburbs of Oxford . After his death, his son Christopher published many of his works like The Silmarillion , Unfinished Tales etc.
INTRODUCTION OF THE NOVEL The Hobbit, a fantasy story of heroic quest, was published in 1937 in Europe by George Allen and Unwin. It was originally written as a book for children (roughly between 1929 & 1936) but after the publication, it earned immense popularity amongst the masses . It wasn't a first fantasy work but its extraordinary success played a vital role in creating a new interest in the fabtasy genre.
INTRODUCTION OF THE NOVEL Various literary forms like epic and song have been blended together and it combines elements from different sources such as mythology and classic fairy tales . SETTING: The story takes place in the "Middle Earth", a fantasyland created by Tolkien himself . We come across different places like Mirkwood Forest, Lonely Mountain, Lake-Town, Misty Mountains and the ruins of the town of Dale.
INTRODUCTION OF THE NOVEL The climate and the culture of Middle-Earth is similar to that of Europe in the Middle Ages . The story is set in antiquity when magic is still around and elves, dwarves and other races share the earth with human beings . Language & Narration : Many of the character names ( like names of dwarves) are derived from the Medieval language because of Tolkien's specialization in Medieval English language and literature.
INTRODUCTION OF THE NOVEL He also uses conventions and codes of myths and legends . It is narrated by a third person omniscient narrator. The tone of the narrator varies. Sometimes, it becomes comic and at other times it becomes condescending or poetic . The speech and the tone of the characters vary depending on their roles in the story . Bilbo's speech becomes dignified and formal when he's offended by someone. Gollum's speech is full of 's' sounds. Thorin is usually angry and hence uses terse language.
What is a Hobbit? The hobbits are short (about half the size of human beings) human-like creatures who are fond of living an easy-going life in their holes. Unlike other characters which are taken from the fantasy world and mythology, hobbits are the creation of Tolkien. They are fat and cheerful but inactive. Although they possess extraordinary characteristics , they lack adventure.
CHARACTER LIST Bilbo Baggins : Bilbo , the protagonist, is a hobbit and lives a quiet and contented life in a hole like other hobbits. He likes to stay home despite having a great deal of untapped strength. Upon the request of Gandalf, he joins the group of dwarves in their quest of treasure . Gandalf: A knowledgeable, wise, old wizard with immense magical powers which he only reveals at the times of utmost need. He helps dwarves in their mission.
CHARACTER LIST Thorin Oakshield : Leader of the dwarves who is also the heir of the treasure. He's a strong but stubborn warrior. Relies heavily on Bilbo to regain the gold. Gollum: A strange, slimy creature who has become unrecognizable because of living deep in caves for years. Bilbo finds his lost magoc ring.
CHARACTER LIST Smaug : A great dragon with huge wings to carry him great distances. He breathes fire and can cities to fire. He also has speaking power. He drives the dwarves and captures their treasure of gold . Thror : Thorin's grandfather who discovers the treasure under the Lonely Mountain by mining a series of caves. The dragon kills his people and captures the treasure.
CHARACTER LIST Dwarves : A group of 12 dwarves ( Fili , Kili , Oro, Dori et al.). Dwarves have been described as greedy . Beorn : A man who can become a bear too. He helps Bilbo and dwarves after their escape from the goblins . Goblins : Infamous , villainous creatures who can make weapons to torture and inflict misery upon others.
