ASTERIODS, METEORITE & COMET
PRESENTED BY ANUJ, ANUP & NITESH

ASTERIODS

WHAT ARE ASTERIODS?
•ASTERIODE ARE
SOLID PIECES OF
ROCK AND METAL
THAT ORBITS MAINLY
BETWEEN THE SUN
AND JUPITER.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?
•Asteroids are very
irregular in shape.
•They are quite similar to
small planets or moon
like phobos (a natural
satellite of mars).
•Unlike comets, they do
not have cloud of
diffuse light around
them.

TYPES OF ASTERIODS
•M are believed to be
metallic.
•C are thought to be
carbonaecous.
•S contain more
silicates.

ASTEROID : LUTETIA-1

WHERE ARE ASTERIODS?
•ASTERIODES ARE MAINLY
FOUND IN ASTERIOD BELT.
•ASTERIOD BELT IS
LOCATED BETWEEN ORBIT
OF MARS & JUPITER.

HAVE THEY HIT US BEFORE?
Many scientists
believe that
asteroids
have hit the Earth
many times
in its history.

is Jupiter necessary for life
on earth?
EARTH JUPITER

Meteorite

a feW Definitions
•MeteoroiD: THEY ARE SMALL PART OF
ROCK & METAL THAT ARE FLYING AROUND
THE SOLAR SYSTEM.
•Meteor: WHEN METEOROID ENTERS THE
EARTH ATMOSPHERE THEN IT IS SAID TO
BE METEOR.
•Meteorite: WHEN METEOR STRIKES THE
EARTH SURFACE THEN IT IS SAID TO BE
METEORITE.

What is the Difference?

iron Meteorites
•These are very dense
and made almost
entirely of iron.
•They show a pattern
of crystallization that
indicates a VERY
SLOW cooling rate.

stony-iron Meteorites
•These are rare and
contain both metal
and stone.
•They are mostly or
completely
shattered.

haVe they hit us Before?
•Most meteoroids
disintegrate before
reaching the earth by
burning up in Earth’s
atmosphere.
•Some leave tail that
lasts for several
minutes large one can
cause damage.

lonar , Maharashtra
•52000 year ago.
•This lake was created
by 60 meter long & 2
millions tons of heavy
meteor.
•The average depth of
Lonar lake is 150m &
1.2km in diametere.

METEOR
•Sometimes called a
“Shooting Star”.
•When a meteorite
enters Earth’s
atmosphere, friction
causes them to burn
up, producing a
streak of light.

METEOR SHOWERS
 There about one
dozen
meteor showers that
occur on regular
dates throughout the
year.
 These showers are
caused by debris left
behind by a comet
that passes close to
orbit of our planet.

cOMET

WHaT aRE cOMET?
•A comet is small
heavenly body and
consist of mainly dust,
ice & some small
gritty particle.
•Sometime called
“dirty snowballs”.

WHaT iS THE STRucTuRE Of
cOMET?
•Nucleus
–10 km “Dirty Snowball”
•Coma
–Cloud of evaporated
ices and ions.
–may be 100,000 km in
diameter.
•Tail
–Always points away
from Sun

TYPES Of cOMET
Comets are classified as either short-period or
long- period comet:

 Short Period: (such as Halley's seen in every
76 years) with periods from years to decades.
 Long Period: (such as humason seen in every
75 thousand year) with period from centuries to
thousands of years.

WHERE dO cOMET cOME fROM?
OORT CLOUD KUIPER BELT
•Many ordinate in a region
called the Oort cloud.
which is located beyond
the orbit of the planet
Pluto.
•But most of comets come
from Oort cloud.
•Oort cloud consists
trillions of comet.
•Others originate in the
Kuiper Belt beyond the
orbit of Neptune.
•Kuiper belt is a source of
short life comets such as
halley.
•Kuiper belt consists of
billions of comet .

OORT cLOud & KuiPER BELT

FAMOUS COMET HALLEY
SEEN AT 10 MARCH (1986)
SIR EDMUND HALLEY COMET HALLEY

ARE COMETS DANGEROUS?
COMET HITTING THE JUPITER.
SHOEMAKER-LEVY-9(JULY 1998)
EFFECT OF SHOEMAKER-
LEVY-9

COMET MISSION BY E.S.A.
•ROSETTA 11 YEAR MISSION.
•LAUNCHED ON FOURTH
MARCH 2004.
•PASSES BY MARS, ASTEROID
STEINS AND LUTETIA-1.
•HIBERNATE FOR 31 MONTH .
•USES SOLAR ENERGY TO FLY.
•LANDED AT 10 NOVEMBER
2014 ON COMET 67-P.
•TO SEARCH ABOUT
PLATINIUM. IRON & GOLD
etc....

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ASTEROID, METEOROID & COMET?
•THEY ARE ACTUALLY SPACE WASTE or SPACE
DUST.
•THEY ARE VALUABLE AS WELL AS DANGEROUS
FOR US.
•ASTEROID : A HUGE PIECE OF METAL IN SPACE.
•METEORIDE : THEY ARE LIKE A ROCK IN SPACE,
THEY ARE THE PART OF ASTEROIDS.
•COMET : A ENORMOUS PIECE OF ICE IN SPACE.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
•GOOGLE (WIKIPEDIA).
•REFERENCE BOOK OF ASTRONOMY.
•YOU TUBE.
