Atomic Theories
What was our lesson last time?
Warning! A ROADBLOCK HAS APPEARED!
Shaggy unknowingly ate a pill containing an unknown effect! Answer the question to know what the effect of the pill is! (Your answer will affect Shaggy’s future!)
It is the basic building block of chemistry MOLECULE ATOM
SHAGGY BECAME THE ULTRA INSTINCT SHAGGY! HE WILL NOW SAVE THE UNIVERSE FROM THE EVIL OVERLORD FRED!
ZOINKS! YOU HAVE CURSED SHAGGY AND TURNED HIM INTO A PICKLE! HE WILL NOW LIVE IN FEAR OF BEING EATEN BY HIS PAL SCOOBY! BETTER LUCK NEXT LIFE!
THE ATOM
The basic unit of chemistry, a particle of matter that uniquely defines a chemical element THE ATOM An atom consists of a central nucleus that is surrounded by one or more negatively charged electrons.
The nucleus is positively charged and contains one or more relatively heavy particles known as protons and neutrons. THE ATOM
Warning! A ROADBLOCK HAS APPEARED!
Taylor Swift is thinking about her future as an artist. Answer the question to know what path Taylor takes! (Your answer will dictate Taylor’s future!)
He proposed that matter is composed of tiny, fundamental particles called atoms DEMOCRITUS DALTON
Taylor Swift became successful! Yay!
OH NO! TAYLOR BECAME SO OBSESSED WITH CURSING HER BOYFRIENDS THAT SHE BECAME AN EVIL WITCH! SHE WILL COME KNOCKING ON YOUR DOOR! BEWARE! THE ATOM
ATOMIC THEORIES
Empedocles, a Greek philosopher proposed that matter was a combination of four fundamental elements – air, earth, fire and water ATOMIC THEORY Empedocles
Early Atomic Theories Democritus proposed that matter is composed of tiny, fundamental particles called atom Atom means “indivisible” or “ uncuttable ” ATOMIC THEORY Democritus
Warning! A ROADBLOCK HAS APPEARED!
The sunflower needs your help! In order for her to produce a lot of sun to defend the lawn, she needs you to answer correctly! (Your answer will affect the future of your lawn!)
It is the number of postulates in Dalton’s Atomic Theory FOUR TWO
SHUCKS! THE SUNFLOWER IS BEING SEASONED BY THE ZOMBIE! IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT GOES FOR YOUR BRAINZZZZZ….
BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH SUN WAS GENERATED, THE SUNFLOWER EVOLVED INTO A GIANT ROBOT THAT DEVASTATED ALL ZOMBIES IN ITS WAKE! OUR BRAINZ ARE ALL SAFE!
Dalton’s atomic theory In the 1700’s, John Dalton proposed his atomic theory based on the studies of previous scientists such as Robert Boyle, Antoine Lovoiser etc. His work can be summarized into four (4) postulates ATOMIC THEORY
1. Matter is composed of tiny, indivisible sphere called atoms ATOMIC THEORY
2. Atoms of the same element are identical, but atoms of one element are different from those of all other elements. ATOMIC THEORY
ATOMIC THEORY
3. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical change. ATOMIC THEORY
4. Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole number ratios to form compounds. ATOMIC THEORY
In a chemical reaction what would happen to the atoms being combined? Do atoms change during chemical reaction?
Can you name compound substances that are around you?
Did you know? Modern atomic model represents atoms containing a nucleus of protons and neutrons and a vague gradient of cloud surrounding it containing electrons; this is referred to as cloud model. The reason electrons are represented as cloud is their behavior being probabilistic. ATOMIC THEORY
Summary of the lesson: The atom is the basic unit of chemistry It was proposed by Greek philosophers In the 1700, John Dalton proposed his atomic theory which can be summarized into 4 postulates.
What is an atom? How did John Dalton create his theory? Briefly explain each postulate of Dalton’s Atomic Theory.
