PROPOSAL ON ATTITUDE OF WOMEN TOWARDS AN IDEAL FAMILY SIZE (A CASE STUDY OF OFFA LOCAL GOVERNMENT) 8 BY ABDULJELEEL HAFUSAT ABIMBOLA MATRICULATION NUMBER ST/HND/F21/1638 SUBMITTED TO Mr. RAJI S. T AUGUST 2023 AUGUST 2023
A Family is a group of two or more persons related by birth marriage and adoption who lives together all such related persons are considered as members of one family. They are related by blood and share the same last name (www.hrsa.gov). Family size refers to the number of persons in the family (www23.statcan.gc.ca). There are factors that affect family size which includes religion, culture, socio-economic status, government policies and basic human rights. An ideal family size can be defined as a units that provides love support and stability to its member’s i.e. having good relationship without having miss understanding. Two children is always the most popular choice, follow by three children, four or more children, and one child or no children (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Family planning as the name implies is having children by choice and not by chance; it is the process of having specific number of children at intervals acceptable by individuals or couples, to promote the health and welfare of the family. Family planning is not a new idea all over the world and also applied to Offa Local Government, Kwara State. Throughout the ages, individuals and families have tried to regulate their fertility either by using herbs, abstinence during ovulation, prolonged breastfeeding and living with parent’s in-laws to avoid sex or polygamy. INTRODUCTION
AIM AND OBJECTIVES The aim is to study the ideal family size and the effects. And the specific objectives are to: Find out the percentage of the respondents that has knowledge about ideal family size. Study if religion has effects on ideal family size. Study if ethnic group has the effects on ideal family size.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The study covers women within the reproduction age (15-49) years along with their socio, economic and religion background. And is limited to the women in Offa Local Government, Kwara State.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY Attitude of woman towards an ideal family size determine what experiences and resources a child will have and receive, and those in turn influence development because the experiences determined by family size are repetitious.
According to Cwako (1997) examines the obtaining trends in women’s ideal family size preferences and family planning practices in rural Kenya. By using primary data collected from three samples drawn from the Abagusii , Abaluyia and Masai ethnic groups, the research findings suggest a declining trend in ideal family size references and increasing rates in the adoption of family planning methods. These research findings hold some important implications for the reversion of the recorded high population growth rates particularly among the Abagusii and Abaluyia of western Kenya.Dhillon and Singh (2010), while studying the determinants of desired family size, finds that women’s parity is positively associated with desired family size. The actual number of children is a good predictor of the desired number of children. The authors also showed that sex composition of children surviving influences the desired family size. They also suggested that education, exposure to mass media, reproductive and child health service utilization from public or private sources, visited by family planning health worker and living in high standard of households are negatively associated with desired family size. LITERATURE REVIEW
RESEARCH METHODS METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION The questionnaire will be administered to the selected study sample. After administering the questionnaire, the researcher make sure each question is well understood by the respondents in order to have a reliable response for the study. Also, after retrieving the filled questionnaire from the respondents, the researcher will ensure that no question is left unanswered immediately at the spot. METHOD OF DATA PRESENTATION The data will be presented in tabular form Tabular presentation of data is a method of presentation of data. It is a systematic and logical arrangement of data in the form of rows and column with respect to the characteristics of data. METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS The Chi Square test for goodness of fit in which observed frequencies occupy a single row is called a one way classification table. Since the number of column is K, this is called 1*K i.e. (1 by k) table. By extending these ideas we can arrive at two way classification table, called (r*k) table in which the observed frequencies occupy r-row and k- column. Such table is called contingency table. Test of statistic Χ 2 tab = X 2 α , [(r-1) (c-1)] is the degree of freedom.
