Characterisation When describing characters in texts the author will use direct or indirect characterisation. Both of these are helpful ways to describe a character for the reader.
Direct Characterisation The author tells you directly about the character and their personality. Paulie is a very loud and boisterous boy. His family is Greek and he loves eating pasta. He loves to play soccer and always tries to wear his favourite team’s jersey. What do these examples tell you about Paulie ?
Indirect Characterisation The author utilises the thoughts and actions of the character as well as the things they say, to give an insight into the character. The things other characters say can also give you insight into the character. ‘I wonder if Mum remembered to wash my favourite soccer jersey?’ Paulie thought to himself. Paulie jumped out of bed and raced down to the kitchen. “ Paulie is such a fun guy!” said Mark. What do these examples tell you about Paulie ?
Paulie’s Morning It was a morning that began like any other. Paulie got up, put on his school clothes and went into the kitchen for breakfast. This is where things started to get strange. Paulie was a brave boy, well that’s what his friends usually said anyway. What greeted him in the kitchen was a scene he could never have been prepared for. The entire kitchen was filled with cats! Big cats, small cats, fluffy and bald cats. Paulie started to shake. He felt his face getting redder and redder. One of the more giant ginger cats made its way over to Paulie and began to sniff his legs. Paulie froze. His breathing became shallow and he could feel the sweat dripping down his forehead. He closed his eyes and tried to will his legs to move but he was paralysed with fear.
