Communicative Competence
( Based on Celce-Murcia et al.)

Why do we need a CC model?
Celce-Murcia et al.’s effort has been motivated
by the belief in the potential in the direct,
explicit approach to the teaching of
communicative skills, which would require a
detailed description of what CC entailsin order
to use the sub-components as a content base in
syllabus design.

Strategic
Competence

What does CC entail?
•Discourse Competence

What is Communicative Competence (CC)?
Based on Michael Canaleand Merrill Swain (1980)
CC refers to the ability to communicate effectively in
the target language

What does CC consist of?
Based on Michael Canaleand Merrill Swain (1980)
1)Grammatical competence: a learner’s ability to use
the lexical items, as well as the rules constraining
morphology, sentence structure, and the sound
system.
2)Sociolinguistic competence: a learner’s ability to
interpret an utterance for its intended social meaning.
3)Strategic competence:the ways that learners
compensate when there are breakdowns in
communication.
