BABY FRIENDLY HOSPITAL CONCEPT Mr. Pradeep Abothu, PhD Nursing. Associate Professor Dept. of Child Health Nursing @ pradeep.nur

Introduction The "Baby-Friendly" concept refers to a global initiative developed in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) known as the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). Its primary aim is to promote and support breastfeeding as the best way to nourish infants and provide them with the best start in life. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was introduced in India in 1993.

Components of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Concept (BFHI): Breastfeeding Promotion: Baby-Friendly hospitals and healthcare facilities are committed to promoting and supporting breastfeeding as the optimal way to feed infants. They provide mothers with information, guidance, and assistance to initiate and sustain breastfeeding. Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding: A central component of the Baby-Friendly concept is the implementation of the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding." These steps are evidence-based practices designed to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers and infants within healthcare facilities.

Supportive Environment: Baby-Friendly facilities create an environment where mothers and babies can stay together 24 hours a day, promoting frequent breastfeeding and bonding. Staff Training: Healthcare staff in Baby-Friendly facilities receive a 20-hour course of specialized training to support breastfeeding mothers. Monitoring and Certification: Hospitals and facilities undergo a rigorous certification process to ensure they meet BFHI criteria, including adherence to the Ten Steps.

Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as per BFHI To ensure optimal care for newborn infants and support breastfeeding, every maternity facility and child care institution should: Develop and maintain a written breastfeeding policy that is consistently communicated to all healthcare staff. Offer comprehensive training to healthcare staff to equip them with the necessary skills for implementing the breastfeeding policy effectively. Inform pregnant women about the benefits of breastfeeding and educate them about breastfeeding management. Assist mothers in initiating breastfeeding within 30 minutes of giving birth.

Instruct mothers on proper breastfeeding techniques and how to maintain lactation, even if they and their infants are temporarily separated. Avoid giving newborns any food or drink other than breast milk, except when medically necessary. Practice rooming-in, allowing mothers and infants to stay together 24 hours a day. Support and encourage breastfeeding on demand, whenever the infant shows signs of hunger. Refrain from providing artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infants. Promote the formation of breastfeeding support groups and guide mothers to join them upon discharge from the hospital or clinic.

THANKS!
