BAD HABITS

NOCOTIANA TOBACCUM Otherwise called Tobacco. Whole plant is poisonous except ripped fruit. The dry leaves of tobacco is used in the form of snuff, smoking and chewing. It contain 3 chemicals-Nicotine, Nor-nicotine and Anabasin . Nicotine and anabasine are equally toxic .

Nicotine content in cigarette ranges from 10 to 12mg. By smoking usually results in absorption of 1 -2 mg/cigarette. ABSORPTION: Nicotin – absorbs rapidly from the mucous membrane. Metabolised by liver excreted through kidney. Mainly affects CNS.

ALCOHOLISM It is a transparent colourless volatile liquid having spirit odour with burning sensation. Alcohol is used for painting and varnishing. Ethanol is produced by yeast fermenting sugar .

TYPES: Vodka 60 – 65% of alcohol. Rum 50 – 60%of alcohol Whisky 45% of alcohol Brandy 40% of alcohol Arrack 40% of alcohol

Jin 45% of alcohol Beer 4 – 8% of alcohol Wine 10 – 18% of alcohol. One can take 100grams per week is safe.

ABSORPTION AND EXCRETION Alcohol is absorbed in stomach(20%) and in intestine (80%). 90% of alcohol is metabolized and oxidized by Liver. 10% is eliminated through Urine. The Alcohol dehydrogenase is secreted by liver so chronic alcoholism leads to Liver failure.

BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION AND ITS ADVERSE EFFECTS 50 – 100mg – reduced attention and slurred speech. 100 –150mg – impaired memory, emotional instability and sleeplessness. 150 – 300mg- mental confusion,decreased pain response,disoriented speech and abnormal gait. 300- 400mg-diminished response to all motor and sensory reflexes. Above 400mg-CNS depression,deep coma

SYMPTOMS: STAGE I: Excessive talkativeness Restlessness Hallucination Corneal congestion and flushinf of face.

STAGE II: Vomitting Giddiness Sinosis Urinary incontinence

STAGE III: Stage of coma All reflexes are lost. Pin point pupil Increased sweating Cold skin respiratory paralysis

Reduced blood pressure and pulse rate. Cessation of circulation Fatal dose: 2g Fatal period: 1 - 4 hours
