The bag can be carried by the hand or on
the shoulder.

Bagtechnique
atool by which the nurse, during her visit
will enable her to perform a nursingprocedure
with ease and deftness, to save time and effort,
with the end view of rendering effectivenursing
care toclients.

The overall objective of using
community health bag in a
systematic method is “to be able
to carry out nursing procedures in
the family with improvised
equipments articles available at
home, maintaining scientific and
nursing principleswhich can also
be practiced by the family in her
absence”.

patient to another and from one place to
another by keeping bag and its contentsas
clean aspossible.
Todemonstrate the principles of
cleanlinessto patients and family
members by using the bag in orderlyway.

1.The use of the bag technique should
minimize if nottotally prevent the spread
of infectionfrom individuals to families,
hence, to thecommunity.
2.Bag technique shouldsave time and
efforton the part of the nurse inthe
performance of nursingprocedures.
3.Bag technique shouldnot overshadow
concernfor the patient rather should
show the effectiveness of total caregiven
to an individual orfamily.

Cleanliness: The bag and its contents are all designed
for efficiency and cleanliness.
The hand must be washed with soap and water each
time before touching the bag. The nurse must avoid
touching dirty or contaminated things after or in
between time of washing.

Thebagshouldbekeptincleanandwithoutdangerof
beingcontaminatedandthechildrenorpetanimals.
Avoidunnecessaryexposurewhiledoneprocedure.
Securethebagbyoftencleaningandshouldbecovered
properlywhenitisnotinuse.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE USEOF
THEBAG
1. The bag should contain all necessary articles,
supplies and equipment which may be used to
answer emergencyneeds.
2.Thebagandit’scontentsshouldbecleanedas
oftenaspossible,suppliesreplacedandready
foruseatanytime.
3.Thebagandit’scontentsshouldbewell
protectedfromcontactwithanyarticleinthe
homeofthepatients.Considerthebagandit’s
contentscleanand/orsterilewhileanyarticle
belongingtothepatientsasdirtyand
contaminated

The public health bag is used bypublic

Provide antenatal, intranatal and
postnatal care to mother andchild.
Perform certain diagnosticprocedures
such as Hb testing, urine testing for
early detection of high risk cases and
provide timelytreatment.

Demonstarte certain Procedures to
family members or community such
as preparing oral dehydration
solution (ORS),baby bath,application
of benzyl benzoate in cases of
scabies.
Provide emergency and first aid
services (+) in case of accidentsand
minorailments.
Provide and demonstrate care in
case ofcommunicable diseasessuch
aschickenpox.

Providefollow up servicesin
chronic illness such as
diabetes,paraplegia or
amputation.
Access the need of individual
and families and givehealth
educationin care of
malnutrition,environmental
hazards,home accidents and
immunizationetc

4.The arrangement of the contents of the bag should
be the one most convenient to the user to facilitate
the efficiency and avoidconfusion

situation calls for, helps in minimizing or avoiding
contamination of the bag and its contents.

soap case and soap
•2.Right side pocket: Newspaper or plastic
sheet, inch tap,fetoscope
•3. Left side pocket:Stationeries, family
folder, waste paper bag.

tray,testtube,testtubeholder,matchbox,spiritlamp,
andbrushetc.

keeping a dairy to
maintain records, clean
paper bags and a square
piece of newspaper or
plastic sheet to keep the
bagon.

These are used for keeping
solutions and medicines for
internal and external use, simple
instruments for dressing, articles
for certain procedures such as
temperature taking, urinetesting,
antenatal examination and few
additional things for health
teaching

PROCEDURE:

Steps
1.Select a workarea
country yard or the
verandah
2.Spreada news-
paper or plastics
square on a flat
surfacearea

5.Remove handwash-
ing materials and
wash pouredwater
6.Take out necessary
articles for the proce-
dure and place on the
clean area w/out touch-
ing the outside of the
bag

PROCEDUR
E:
1.Openthebag,takethelinenorplasticliningand
spreadoverworkfield.Thepaperliningcleanside
out(foldedpartout).
2.Place the bag on the table or any flat surface
lined with paper lining, clean side out (folded part
touching the table). Put bag’s handles or straps
beneath the bag.
3.Takeouthandtowel,soapdish,andapronand
placethematonecorneroftheworkarea(within
theconfinesoftheplasticlining).
4. Place waste bag outside of workarea.

5. Ask for a basin of water if faucet is notavailable.
Place these outside the workarea.
6. Do hand washing. Wipe, dry with towel. Leave
the plastic wrappers of the towel in soap dish in the
bag.
7. Put on right side out and wrong side with crease
touching the body, sliding the head into the neck
strap, neatly tie the straps at theback.
8. Put out the things most needed for the specific
case ( ex. Thermometer, kidney basin, cottonball,
waste paper) and place at one corner of thework
area.

9. Proceed to the specific nursing care ortreatment.
10. After completing nursing care ortreatment,
clean and alcoholize the thingsused.

Record all relevant findings about
the client and members of the
family.
Take note of environmental factors
which affect the clients/family health.
Include quality ofnurse-
patient relationship.
Assess effectiveness of nursing
care provided.

In order to keep your bag ready for use atany
time,observe some of the following
instructions.
Clean the bag daily,protect from excessiveheat
or rain to reserve it in a goodcondition.
Replace the drugs,dressing and linen dailyin
thebag.
Empty all the contents,wash the bag withsoap
and water once in a week or more frequently
depending on how much it has been used and
dry it thesun.

Wash the non-expendable articles such
as instruments,linen and utensils with
soap and water and boilthem.
Repalce cotton or plastic bags
containing swabs and dressingwith
sterile one.
Checkgloves,catheters,thermometer
and glass articles,replace if spoilt or
broken.
Repack the bag in an orderly way;keep
articles in their usual places to make
them easily traceble.
