3. Introduction Band knife machines provide the most accurate cutting and are therefore used in cutting small and complex shape components. A band knife machine has a working surface and a knife that forms a moving circle during the fabric cutting process. The band knife is characterized by its length, width and thickness. The work surface of the machine is smooth and may be equipped with a special air blowing system to facilitate maneuverability of cut fabrics. The fabric plies are guided against the cutting device which is fixed and performs only a vertical movement down to the fabric. Band knife cutting machines are used in garments industries 3

4. Features of Band Knife Cutting Machine It comprises a series of three or more pulleys, which provide the continuous rotating motion of the knife . An endless knife is used here. Knife is usually narrower than on a straight knife. A large size of table is used to support the fabric & for cutting. Air blower blows the air to minimize the weight of fabric. Balls in air blower help to move the fabric in different direction. Automatic grinder is used. In this method machine is stationary but fabric is movable. High speed RPM motor is used. Required a large space for it. This is like a saw mill cutter. Knife life time depends on fabric type & uses of machine. 4

5. Uses of Band Knives Band knives are used where higher standard of accuracy is required. As a first step, by using straight knife the lay will be sectioned that by using band knife, the accurate cutting will be done. When smart parts like collars, pockets are cut, a template of metals is used in the shape of pattern to get correct shape. Mostly used in men’s wear. Generally used to cut large parts of garments such as jackets and overcoats 5

9. Working Mechanism of Band Knife Cutting Machine In band knife cutting machine, the knife is fixed & the fabric will be moved. The principle applied here is opposite to straight and round knife . Band knife is used for precision cutting small parts of garment. This machine contains special blower which decreases resistance between fabrics and table, which enables the fabrics be moved easily and be cut precisely. Air blower blows the air to minimize the weight of fabric . It comprises a series of three or more pulleys ( powered by electric motor ), which provide the continuous rotating motion of the knife. An endless knife is used here. Knife is usually narrower than on a straight knife . The blade moves vertically through a flat working table . Automatic grinder is used to sharpen the knife . The cutting machines operate with either a fixed knife speed or an adjustable speed which accommodates a wider range of fabrics. 9

10. Advantages & Disadvantages of Band Knife Cutting Machine Advantages   Suitable for any types of line. Very large productivity for limited products, such as collars, cuff, placket, etc. Automatic grinder grinds the knife instantly. Air blower helps to reduce the fabric weight which increases smooth movement of fabric. Possible to cut 90° angle of the lay. Intensity of accident is low. Disadvantages Not suitable for large component due to the length of the table. Work load is high as machine is stationary and fabric is movable. Running cost is higher. Required fi x space. Not possible to cut fabric directly. Not possible to cut fabric directly from lay. Block pieces of fabric required in bundle form to cut by this machine. 10

The more functions (previously described) add in the machine, the cost of the machine increase. In Bangladesh, various brand’s different models are used. From the above discussion, I recomand the automatic SK – 1200 is better to use, though it has a high rate.

23. Maintenance of Band Knife Cutting Machine Daily Maintenance Remove the knife and clean the knife slides with the slot cleaner included with machine. To prevent undue accumulation of lint do not oil the plate rollers. If the rollers stick, remove them from the plate and wash them in cleaning solvent. Clean and oil the guides and bearings. Check the wear of the lateral and the back roller, to see if it’s necessary to replace them. Check the electrical wiring system. Check the motor pulley guard. Check the machine pullet guard. Check all the screw & nut & Bolt. Weekly Maintenance Check and put oil if necessary all the joints. Oil level check and refill. Use an approved air hose or bellows to blow any lint from around the motor and sharpener. Remove the cover and clean any lint from around the screw mechanism in the sharpener. Apply one drop of oil only on the specified location at tubes, shaft pulley, and belt pulley. Check the motor pulley & machine pulley guard. Electrical wiring should be check . 23
