plasticcardsandmore.BarTendergivesyouthetoolstoeasilyandefficientlydesignlabelsand
templates,configureandconnecttodatasourcesandbusinesssystems,andlaunchprint
commandsfromanysystem,OSordevice.

4. Installation
ChoosingWhattoInstall
BarTenderincludesavarietyofapplicationsthatprovidealevelofpowerandflexibilitynotavailable
inanyotherdesignandprintingsoftwarepackage.Theapplicationsavailabletoyoudependonthe
editionoftheBarTenderthatyoupurchased.
ThefollowingtabledefinestheapplicationsincludedineacheditionofBarTender.Ifyouchoosea
typicalinstallation,theseapplicationswillbeinstalledbydefaultwithBarTender.

BarTenderwillrunindemomode,alteringyourprintoutputfromyourintendeddesign.
lIfyouarerunningonlyonecopyofBarTender,SLSandBarTenderareusuallyinstalledonthe
samecomputer.Ontheinstaller,simplychecktheboxforSeagullLicenseServertoinstall
bothapplications.
lIfyouarerunningBarTenderonmultiplecomputerswithinyourenvironment,SLSisinstalled
onONLYonecomputer.Thiscomputer,typicallyaserver,mustbeaccessibleacrossyour
networkbyallinstalledcopiesofBarTender.Whenrunningtheinstaller,youhavetheoption
toinstallSeagullLicenseServerOnly.Usethisoptionifthecomputer(orserver)runningSLS
willnotalsohaveBarTenderrunningonit.IfyouchoosetoalsoinstallBarTender,runthe
installerandchecktheboxforSeagullLicenseServertoinstallbothapplications.Allother
installationsshouldnotincludeSeagullLicenseServer.
IfyouwillbecreatingyourowncustomapplicationstorunandmanageBarTender,theBarTender
.NETSDKisalsoavailableforinstallation.ThiscollectionofAPIsletyourapplicationsautomatically
performallofthedata-retrievalandhighdemandlabelprintingtasksthatBarTenderitselfperforms.

5. InstallingBarTender
BarTenderisavailableintwoversions:32-bitand64-bit.
lIfyouhavea32-bitoperatingsystem(OS),youmustinstallthe32-bitversionofBarTender.
lIfyouhavea64-bitversionofWindows,youmayinstalleitherthe64-bitor32-bitversionof
BarTender.The64-bitversionisrecommended,butyoumayneedtoinstallthe32-bitedition
ifyouareusingcertainOLEDBorODBCdatabasedrivers,orifyouneedtodevelopa32-bit
applicationusingtheSDK.Pleaseseethewhitepaper32-bitand64-bitBarTenderformore
detailedinformation.
BeforeinstallingBarTender,verifythatyouhavethefollowingeasilyaccessible:

7.OntheServiceConfigurationpage,specifyauseraccountfortheservicesusedby
BarTender.ClickCreateaNewUserAccountorSelectanExistingUserAccounttochange
thedefaultsettings.Onceyourchangesaremade,ortokeepthedefaultsettings,clickNext.
8.OntheReviewOptionsscreen,verifythatthecomponentsyouwantarebeinginstalled.To
completeyourinstallationofBarTenderandtheselectedCompanionApplicationsincluded
withyouredition,clickInstall.
InstallingBarTenderPrintPortal
BarTenderPrintPortalisaweb-basedapplicationthatprovidesaninterfaceforselectingand
printingBarTenderdocuments.Asinglewebserver"hosts"PrintPortal,makingitsdocuments
accessibletoothercomputers,tablets,andevenmobiledevicesovertheinternet.Usersinyour
companycanprintdocumentssimplybygoingtoawebsiteandselectingthedocumenttheywantto
print.
PrintPortalmustbehostedonacomputerrunningthefollowingsoftware

Allclientdevicesmusthaveaccesstoawebbrowser.
EnablingAuthentication
AdministratorscanconfigurePrintPortalsothatusershaveloginusingtheWindowsaccounts.
Withauthenticationenabled,onlyuserswiththeAdministerpermissioninAdministration
ConsolewillbeabletochangePrintPortal'sadministrativesettings.Authenticationisenabledin
theAdministrativeSetupsettingsofPrintPortal.
Ifyouwishtofurthersecureyourenvironment,youcanchoosetoauthenticateusersover
HTTPS.ThisrequiresthatasecuritycertificateandHTTPSbindingisconfiguredforthePrintPortal
websiteinIIS.RefertotheBarTenderPrintPortalhelpsystemformoreinformation.

7. ForDesignersandPrintOperators
Whetheryouaredesigningorprintingitems,theBarTenderinterfaceispowerfulandusingitcanbe
intimidatingfornewusers.Thischapteriswrittentogetyoustartedwiththemostbasictasksin
BarTender,includingcreating,designing,andprintingitems.
CreatingaNewDocument
DependingonhowBarTenderisconfigured,oneofthreethingswillhappenwhenyouselectNew
fromtheFilemenuorclickonthemaintoolbar:
lTheNewDocumentWizardopens,lettingyoumanuallyspecifythesizeandshapeofyour
designarea.(Defaultbehavior)
lAblanktemplateappearsonscreen,withthesizeandshapedefinedbythesettingsofthe
defaultprinteronyourcomputer.
lAcopyofanexistingdocumentopens.
Thedesignareaonscreenshouldmatchthedimensionsandshapeoftheactualitemsthatyouare
printingon.Thisverifiesthatwhatyoucreateonscreenisthesamedesignthatwillprintonyour
items.Thesesettings,alongwithsettingssuchasthenumberofitemsonapage,theorientationof
yourdesign,orthesizeofthegapbetweenmultipleitemsaredefinedusingeithertheNew
DocumentWizardorthePageSetupdialog.
Eachon-screendesignareaisconfiguredtoaprinterstockonaspecificprinter.Ifyou
needtochangeprintersormedia,BarTenderwillattempttoautomaticallychangethe
dimensionsofthedesignareatomatchthenewprinterormedia.Duetothefactthat
differentprinterssupportdifferentsizesofmedia,thepositioningofyourobjectsmayno
longerfitonyouritem,andyouwillneedtoeitheralteryourdesignorchangethepage
settingsusingthePageSetupdialog.
UsingBarTender'sSampleDocuments
Becausedesigningtemplatesonyourownmaybetimeconsuming,anumberofstandard
documentscanbeinstalledusingtheBarTenderinstallationpackage.Anyofthesedocumentscan
bemodifiedtoyourownrequirements.Oftentimes,youcanevensavetimebymodifyinganexisting
document;ifoneisclosetowhatyou'relookingtodesign,thenyoudonotneedtostartfrom
scratch.
ViewingthesupplieddocumentsinBarTendercanalsobeaneasylearningresourcetodiscoverthe
manyfeaturesandcapabilitiesoftheapplication.Afteryouhaveloadedadocument,youcan
examinethevariousdialogsettingstodeterminewhatfeaturesandcustomizationoptionsare
available.

AddingObjectstoYourDesign
Onceyouhaveablanktemplate(ordesignarea)toworkwith,youcanbegindesigningyouritemsby
addingobjectstoit.BarTenderincludesthefollowingobjecttypes:
Barcode:SelectfromhundredsofbarcodesymbologiesandspecificationsusingtheSelect
Barcodedialog,orselectarecentlyusedsymbologyfromthelist.
Text:Addasimpletextobjecttoyourtemplate,orspecifyformattedtextbyenteringRTF,
HTML,orXAMLcode.
Line:Addalinetoenhancethedesignofyouritems.
Shape:Selectfromavarietyofshapes,includingrectangles,arrows,polygons,andmore.
Picture:Importapictureintoyourdesignfromanexistingfileonyourcomputer.
Encoder:Addamagneticstripe,RFIDtag,orsmartcodeencodertoyouritem.

9. Toaddanobjecttoyourtemplate
1.Fromtheobjecttoolbar,selecttheiconforthetypeofobjectyouwanttoadd.Alternatively,
selecttheobjecttypefromtheCreatemenu.
2.Selectyourdesiredobjectfromthesub-menu.Forlineobjects,skipthisstep.
3.Clickonthedesiredlocationtoaddtheobject.Forlineobjects,clickanddragtothedesired
endpointoftheline.
UsingDatabaseswithBarTender
Manyusersstoredata,suchascustomerrecordsorproductinformation,inafileoutsideof
BarTender,suchasanExcelspreadsheet,SQLdatabase,ortextfile.Ifyouwanttousethisdata,
BarTendercanpulltheinformationdirectlyintoanybarcode,textobject,orencoderobjectonyour
template.Theseexternaldatafilesarecollectivelyknownasdatabases.Thistopicwalksthroughthe
stepsneededtoconnecttoadatabaseandpullinformationintoanobjectonyourtemplate.
Toconnecttoadatabase
1.FromtheFilemenu,selectDatabaseSetup.Alternatively,clicktheicononthemain
toolbar.Oneofthefollowingwilloccur:
lIfyouhavenotpreviouslyconnectedtoadatabase,thiswilllaunchtheDatabase
SetupWizard.
lIfyouarecurrentlyconnectedtoadatabase,thiswillopentheDatabaseSetupdialog.
ClicktheicontolaunchtheDatabaseSetupWizard.
2.OntheinitialpageoftheDatabaseSetupWizard,selectthetypeoffileyourdataisstoredin.
ClickNext.
3.Followthewizardtocompletetheconnectionsetupfortheselectedfiletype.Attheendofthe
wizard,clickFinishtoopentheDatabaseSetupdialog.
Onceyouareconnectedtoadatabase,theinformationstoredinthefilecanbeusedtopopulate
barcodes,textobjects,orencoderobjectsonyourtemplate.Thesimplestwaytopullinthis
informationistousetheDataSourcespaneoftheToolbox.
Tolinkanobjecttoadatabasefield
1.SelectDataSourcesintheToolboxtodisplaytheDataSourcespane.
2.ExpandDatabaseFieldstoshowallavailablefieldsinyourdatabase.
3.Clickandholddownonthedesireddatabasefield.
4.Dragthedatabasefieldtothedesiredbarcode,text,orencoderobject.
5.Releasethemousebutton.

10. IftheLiveDatabaseNavigatorisenabledatthebottomofthedesignarea,yourdatawillbe
displayeddirectlyonyourtemplate.Otherwise,selectPrintPreviewfromtheFilemenutoviewyour
dataonyouritems.
EnteringDataatPrint-Time
Insomecases,thedataforoneormoreobjectsonyourtemplatemightnotbeknownuntilprint-
time.Considerthefollowingtwoexamples:
lAstandardshippinglabelwhichincludestheweightofapackage,buttheweightofthe
packageisnotknownuntilprint-time.
lAproductlabelforperishableitemsforwhichyouneedtoenterthecurrentdateeachtime
youprintthelabel.
Whenyouencounterthistypeofrequirement,youcanconfigureBarTendertodisplayadataentry
formatthestartoftheprintjobwhereuserscanenterthenecessarydata.
Tocreateanddesignadataentryform
1.Atthebottomofthedesignarea,clickthetabForm1toopenFormDesignView.
2.Fromtheobjecttoolbar,selecttheiconforthecontrolorobjectyouwanttoadd.
Alternatively,selecttheobjecttypefromtheCreatemenu.
3.Selectyourdesiredcontrolorobjectfromthesub-menu.Forlineobjects,skipthisstep.
4.Clickonthedesiredlocationtoaddthecontrolorobject.Forlineobjects,clickanddragtothe
desiredendpointoftheline.
Tolinkacontroltoatemplateobject
1.IntheDataSourcespaneoftheToolbox,locatethedatasourcewhosetextyouwanttoenter
atprint-time.
2.Clickonthatdatasource,andwhileholdingthemousebuttondown,dragthedatasource
ontothedesiredcontrol.
3.Releasethebuttontolinkthecontroltotheobjectordatasourceonyourtemplate.
Toenterdataintoaformatprint-time
1.FromtheFilemenu,selectPrinttoopenthePrintdialog.Alternatively,clicktheiconon
themaintoolbar.
2.ClickPrinttodisplaythedataentryform(s)foryourdocument.
3.Filloutthedataintothecontrolsonyourform.Thedatathatyouenterwillappearonyour

11. PrintingYourDocument
Onceanitemisdesigned,youarereadytoprintyourdocument.Dependingonhowyourproduction
environmentissetup,youcanprintfromanumberofdifferentapplicationsinBarTender,as
describedbelow:
ToprintyourdocumentfromBarTenderDesigner
Eachon-screendesignareaisconfiguredtoaspecificprinter.Sincedifferentprinters
supportdifferentsizesofmedia,changingyourprintermayaffectthepositioningof
objectsonyouritems.Ifthisoccurs,youmayneedtomodifyyourdesigntomatchthe
newprinterandmediachosenbeforeprinting.
1.Openthedocumentyouwishtoprint.
2.FromtheFilemenu,selectPrinttoopenthePrintdialog.Alternatively,clicktheiconon
themaintoolbar.
3.Confirmthatthecorrectprinterisselected.
4.Ifyouareconnectedtoadatabase,verifythattheUseDatabasecheckboxisenabled.
5.ForCopies,enterthenumberofcopiesyouwishtoprint.Ifyouareconnectedtoadatabase,
thisisthenumberofcopiesforeachrecordinyourdatabase,andnotthetotalnumberof
itemsthatwillprint.
6.ClickPrint.
ToprintyourdocumentfromPrintStation
1.OpenPrintStation.
2.Browsetothedocumentyouwishtoprint.
3.Clickonceonthedocument.DependingonhowPrintStationisconfigured,thiswilleither
initiatetheprintjoboropenthePrintDocumentdialog.
4.Ifprompted,selecttheprinteryou'dliketouseandenterthenumberofcopiestoprint.
5.ClickPrint.
ToprintyourdocumentfromPrintPortal
1.OpenPrintPortal.
2.Browsetothedocumentyouwishtoprint.
3.Clickonceonthedocument.DependingonhowPrintPortalisconfigured,thismaypromptyou
toconnecttoaprinter.Inthiscase,followthewizarduntilitdisplaysthePrintpage.
4.OnthePrintpage,selecttheprinteryou'dliketouseandenteranyotherinformation.

13. ForAdministrators
WhileBarTenderisfullyfunctionalonceyouinstallit,youcancustomizemanyofBarTender's
configurationsettingstooptimizetheuseoftheapplicationinyourprintingenvironment.Asan
administratorofBarTender,youareresponsibleformanaginglicensing,configuringapplication
settings,andmonitoringBarTender'sperformance.Essentially,itisuptoyoutocustomize
BarTenderinawaythatmatchestheneedsofyourcompany.Thissectioniswrittentohelpyou
locatethedifferentadministrativesettings,andtointelligentlysetupBarTenderforyourprinting
environment.
ManagingYourAutomationLicense
WhenrunningeithertheAutomationorEnterpriseAutomationeditionofBarTender,theapplication
mustbeabletocommunicatewithSeagullLicenseServer(SLS)tomonitorprinterlicensing.Each
timeauserprints,BarTenderwillscanthenetworkattemptingtoconnecttoSeagullLicenseServer
onthespecifiedport.
OnecopyofSLSneedstobeinstalledonyournetworktomonitorprinterusageandenforce
licensing.FromSLS,youcantrackthenumberofprintersinuse,aswellastrendsinprinterusage.In
addition,SLScane-mailnotificationsorcreateamessagelogwhenyourprinterlicenseisreached.
BarTender'sconnectiontoSLSisconfiguredusingtheLicensingSetupdialog.IfBarTendercannot
locateSLSonthenetwork,verifytheconnectionsettingsandtesttheconnectionusingthisdialog.
TomanageSeagullLicenseServerconnectionoptions
1.FromtheAdministermenu,selectLicensingSetuptoopenthecorrespondingdialog.
2.Tousethedefaultconnectionsettings,enableAutomaticallyFindSeagullLicenseServer.
Otherwise,disable(uncheck)thisoptionandmanuallyentertheServernameoraddress
whereSLSisinstalled.
3.InthePreferredsection,modifythePort,Timeout,andAttemptssettings.
4.ClickTesttoverifythattheconnectionisworkingproperly.
5.ClickOKtoclosethedialog.
IfSeagullLicenseServerisrunningbehindanetworkrouteroryouhave
afirewallenabled,enablingAutomaticallyFindSeagullLicenseServer
maynotlocatetheserver.Iftheconnectiontestfails,manuallyenter
thenetworkaddressintotheServerfield.
IntheeventthatBarTendercannotconnecttothepreferredSeagullLicenseServer,youcanspecify
thenetworklocationofanotherinstalledinstanceofSLS.ThealternateSLSmustbeinstalledand
activatedindependentlyofthepreferredone,thusrequiringthepurchaseofanadditionalsoftware
license.

14. SettingUptheBarTenderSystemDatabase
TheBarTenderSystemDatabaseisthecentraldatastorageforapplicationsintheBarTenderSuite.
ItisrequiredformostofthefeaturesincludedintheAutomationandEnterpriseAutomation
editions.Itincludesdatasuchas:
lEventsencounteredbyanyBarTenderapplication(suchaserrormessagesand"popup"
dialogs)
lInformationabouteachprintjobsentfromBarTender(suchasthedocumentthatwas
printed,alongwiththetimethejobwassent)
lSecuritychecksdefinedinAdministrationConsole

ThedefaultBarTenderSystemDatabaseusesMicrosoftSQLServerExpress,whichisfreebuthasa
10GBdatabasesizelimit.Ifyouwantmultiplecomputerstoshareacentralizeddatabase,orifyou
haveasinglecomputerloggingahighvolumeofprintjobs,youmaywanttouseyourowndatabase
server.
TheBarTenderSystem DatabaseSetupWizardcanberunfromtheBarTenderinstaller,following
theinstallationofBarTender.Ifitwasnotinstalledatthattimeorifyouwishtoinstallanother
BarTenderSystemDatabase,youcanrunthewizarddirectlyfromAdministrationConsole.
Formoreinformationoncreating,administering,andmaintainingtheBarTenderSystemDatabase,
refertotheSystemDatabasesectionoftheBarTenderhelpsystem.
ConfiguringBarTenderSecurity
ThereareanumberofsecuritymeasuresavailableinBarTendertohelpyouprotectyour
documents,andtoregulateyourprintingenvironment.SecurityinBarTenderishighlycustomizable,
rangingfromsimpledocumentprotectiontomorecomplexuserpermissionsystems.Refertothe
BarTenderSystemSecuritywhitepaperforacomprehensivedescriptionofallavailablesecurity
measurestohelpyoudecidewhichmethodsaremostappropriateforyourenvironment.
AllofBarTender'ssecuritysettingsfallintooneoftwocategories:

scripts.IfyouarerunningtheEnterpriseAutomationeditionofBarTender,youcanuseLibrarianfor
filerevisioncontrolandworkflow.
TheFolderandFileLocationsSetupdialogdefinesalloftheselocations,whetherthey'reonyour
localPC,somewhereonthenetwork,orstoredinLibrarian.Allofthedefinedlocationscanbe
transferredbetweeninstalledinstancesofBarTender.TosavethecurrentlocationsinanXMLfile,
selectExportLocationsandbrowsetothedesireddestinationdirectory.Oncesaved,theXMLfile

UsingLibrarian
Librarianallowsyoutostorefilesinacentralizeddatabaseratherthan“loose”onvarioushard
drives,sofilesareeasiertotrackandmanage.Filecheck-inandcheck-outpreventsusersfrom
overwritingeachothers'changes.Youcanuserevisioncontroltoretaincopiesofallprevious
versionsofafilesothatyounotonlyhaveahistoryofwhohasmadewhatchangesandwhen,
butyoucanretrieveactualcopiesofthepreviousversionsandeven“rollback”toanolder
versionifdesired.LibrariancanbeusedwithSecurityCenter,lettingyoucontrolwhichuserscan
accessfileswithinLibrarian,andwhattheycandowiththem.
