11th of September The National Day of Catalonia is a day - long festival in Catalonia . It commemorates the defeat of the Catalan troops during the War of the Spanish Succession . The Catalan were defeated at the Siege of Barcelona by the troops of Bourbon Philip V of Spain on 11th September 1714.
independence This year , on 11th September , there was a big demonstration in Barcelona where there were 1.5 million people . It’s the most important demonstration in our history . Many people in Catalonia want the independence to become a new state in Europe .
THE GOTHIC QUARTER
The Gothic Quartier is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from Medieval times, and some others as far back as the Roman settlement.
BARCELONA CATHEDRAL It was constructed throughout 13th to 15th Centuries and in the 19th Century was constructed the neo- gothic façade . It is dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, co-patron saint of the city , a young virgin who , suffered martyrdom during Roman times in the city .
PLAÇA DE SANT JAUME "Saint James's Square “ is the administrative heart of Barcelona. At one side of the square there is the town hall and at the other the offices of the Presidency of Catalonia .
PORTAL DE L’ANGEL It's a pedestrian street and it’s always crowded with tourists at any time of the year. Portal de l'Àngel is one of the most important shopping venues in Barcelona.
THE SAGRADA FAMILIA
T he Sagrada Família
It is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona . It was designed by a Catalan architect called Antoni Gaudi in 1882 .
Although incomplete, the church is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 was consecrated and proclaimed a minor basilica by the Pope Benedict XVI.
LA PEDRERA
It’s a building designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí and built during the years 1905–1910 . It is located at 92, Passeig de Gràcia, in the Eixample district of Barcelona.
It was built for the married couple, Roser Segimon and Pere Mil à . The design by Gaudi was not followed in some aspects. The local government objected to some aspects of the project, fined the owners for many infractions of building codes, ordered the demolition of aspects exceeding the height standard for the city.
LA RAMBLA
La Rambla is a long street in the centre of Barcelona. It starts in Pla ç a Catalunya between the old quartiers Barri Gòtic and El Raval and it finishes at Port Vell with the Christopher Columbus Monument near the sea.
In L a Rambla there are always a lot of people .
There you can find L iceu opera theatre, the famous “ Boqueria ” market and Canaletes Fountain , famous as a meeting point to celebrate the F.C. Barcelona victories.
