Topic: Barrier to critical thinking Mubashir Imtiaz

What is critical thinking? Simple thinking does not mean that you are a critical thinker. Critical thinking is that mode of thinking, about any subject, content, or problem in which a thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by taking skillfully charge of his or her structures inherit in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them.

Major barrier of ct are: Egocentrism Sociocentrism Wishful thinking Drone mentality Schedule pressures Biased nature and experiences Work pressure Fear Laziness

Egocentrism It is in ability to differentiate between self an other. It is an in ability to accurately assume or understand any perspective other than ones own. These peoples are selfish, self-absorbed who view their interests, values and ideas superior to others. This type of behavior is less prominent in adulthood but soon it becomes.

sociocentrism Sociocentrism is a group involved thinking. It is a tendency to assume the superiority or righteousness of one’s own group. In this peoples are narrow-minded and they are convinced they are in possession of truth that they are right.

Wishful thinking Wishful thinking is basically day-dreaming. I understand it in two ways . Like in first side it could be a positive effect by identifying things to be improved. Now on the other hand it could be a barrier if it is like dreaming bout something in a way that we are entertaining our feeling but not thinking proactively and practically about it.

Drone mentality If you have a drone mentality this may pay attention to what is gong on around you. This mentality is dangerous in classroom because learners forget to how to deal with the new circustances.it also causes them to shy away from challenges for the sake of ease. Teacher should avoid the temptation of slipping into patterns that can lead to a drone mentality effect in the classroom. By constantly finding new things and connections to new things and fields the teaching method may remain fresh and interesting.

Schedule pressures Time constraints often serve as a barrier to integrating learning opportunities that support critical thinking skills. Due to training, practice and patience teachers can learn various strategies that make them naturally model thinking behaviors in the classroom that improve learners critical thinking skills. It is especially that teachers do their best to create a learning schedule that is not burdened by time constraints.

Biased nature and experiences Having a personal bias is one of the biggest barriers to Critical Thinking as it curbs and prohibits a person from making decisions that are fair, open minded and transparent. It also prevents the person to use logical reasoning, experience and the basic common sense to make decisions that are informed and valid.

Work pressure Quite many numbers of times at our work place. We are overloaded with the deadlines and it does effect our skill of critical thinking. But the silver lining is that a person can also sharpen his critical learning skills and abilities amidst the tough and tight deadlines. As we know when the time is short and aa deadline needs to be met we often go for a option in completing the work without any strategic thinking and long term vision and here barrier arises in the critical thinking.

fear Fear can act as a barrier not only in critical thinking but also for the overall growth and development of a person. Fear makes him unconfident, demotivated and not very agile to think outside the box and come up with the ideas and strategies. Fear can arouse out of the various reasons such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues and others such personal reasons affecting a person’s professional life as well.

laziness Critical thinking requires a person to do a lot of research, study literature that is work related and be open to learning new things for growth and development. But when a person is lazy it acts as one of the barrier to Critical Thinking.
