Barriers of communication Organizational & Personal Barriers

iii) Organizational Barriers The factors related to organization structure, authority relationship, rules & regulations may act as barriers for effective communication. Organizational barriers: Organizational policy. Rules & regulations. Status. Complexity in organization structure. Organizational facilities.

i ) Organizational policy: If the organizational policy is implicit & not supportive to free flow of communication , it may affect communication. For example an organization with highly centralized pattern my not encourage free flow of communication.

ii) Rules & regulations: Rigid rules are hurdles for communication. Communication through prescribed channel (top level to low level) may result in delay of communication.

iii) status: Status of superior creates a psychological barrier between him & subordinates. A status conscious manager may not allow his subordinate to express his feelings & opinions.

iv) Complexity in organization structure: In an organizational where there are number of managerial levels (top, middle & low), communication gets delayed & disturbed as number of filtering points are more.

iv) Organizational facilities If smooth & clear facilities are not provided, communication may be affected. Facilities like frequent meetings, suggestion & complaint box, social & cultural gatherings encourage free flow of communication.

iv) Personal Barriers The personal factors & both sender & receiver may affect the communication. Personal barriers: Fear of challenge to authority. Lack of confidence of superior on his subordinate. Unwillingness to communicate. Lack of proper incentives.

i ) Fear to challenge to authority: If a superior perceive that a particular communication may adversely affect on his authority, he (or) she may hold such communication. If a superior does not have confidence on the skills of their subordinate, they may not seek advice (or) opinion. ii ) Lack of confidence of superior on his subordinate :

iii) Unwillingness to communicate: Sometimes, subordinates may not be prepared to communicate with superiors, if they perceive that it may affect them adversely. If there is no proper incentive for communication, subordinate may not take initiative to communicate. If there is no reward for good suggestion, the subordinates are not willing to provide suggestions. iv ) Lack of proper incentives :
