BREAKING BARRIERS IN PRAISE & WORSHIP
Three important and dangerous giants or enemies who
confront the Christian are:
The world–the externalfoe.
The flesh–the internalfoe.
The devil–the infernalfoe.
Understand this: God theFatheropposes the
world–John 15:5, 9; James 4:4; in this context God is in
reference to the Father. God the Spiritopposes the flesh
–Gen.6:3 the context is the utterly carnal and self-
oriented society.God the Sonopposes the devil. The first
promise and prophecy reveals it audibly –Gen.3:15. In
Matt.4:1-11 we see Him in direct confrontation with the devil in
the wilderness. In 1John 3:8 we are told the ministry of the Son,
that He was manifested to destroy the works of Satan.

The World –External Foe
This speaks of human life and society with God left out
–a thing that happened since the entrance of sin. The
world, in this technical, Biblical sense, is the devil’s lair
for sinners and his lure for Christians.
In its splendor, its learning, its religion, its culture, its
government, its pleasures, its history, its ambitions, its
power, its needs, its people, Egypt is a type, a picture, of
the world.
We have all been born into a world society which is
antagonistic toward the things of God. The world
methods, even when clothed in religious garb, are
generally not God’s methods.
Stripped off its religious guise, the world is opposed to
anything Biblical.

The World Defeated
1)In a positional sense.Every Christian has been born
again and has been given a change in his citizenship –
Philip.3:20.
2)In practical sense. The world can put on a deceptive
front. It has many allurements, many pleasures,
many interests, and many noble facets, all of them
made stronger in their attraction for the Christian
because of past associations before conversion.
Remember this –the world is God’s enemy. Our
attitude should be “…separation….” –2Cor.6:14-17.
Separation is not isolation or institutional isolation.
Separation has to do with insulation, not isolation.

The Flesh –The Internal Foe
The Character of the Flesh
The flesh is used frequently in a special, technical sense to depict
the desires and lusts which are so characteristic of human nature.
Every human being was born with King-Self firmly seated on the
throne of the personality. This is the nature that can do nothing
right in the sight of God –Rom.7:18.
Its religious aspect. The flesh can be very religious. Philippians
3:4-7 lists eight things of a religious nature. Paul realized that after
meeting Christ that which was gain according to the flesh, far from
being assets, were total spiritual liabilities (vs.7-8).
Its repulsive aspect. The flesh can also be very repulsive. Check
Gal.5:19-21; Rom.8:5-8.

The Conquest of the Flesh
The Eternal Fact. How can we obtain victory over
the flesh? It is only by death! There are two aspects of
this death we need to grasp. First, there is what we
might call the eternal fact of our death. Paul discusses
it majorly in Rom.6:6-11. This is one of the
revolutionary concepts in the NT. When Christ died, I
died. He died not only for me, but as me.
The eternal fact is that God has already put the ON
(Old Nature) to death at Calvary.
The Daily Act.God has dealt with the ON but
expects the Christian to deal with it too. Our part is to
appropriate what God has done –Rom.6:6-13. Paul
says know, reckon, and yield.

The Devil –the infernal foe
His Downfall.About forty different names and titles are used
in the Bible to describe him. Isaiah 14:12-27, Ezekiel 28:11-19
His Dominions.Satan is a very powerful and brilliant clever
being but he does not have the attributes of deity.
His Defeat. The devil is no match of God. The key victory
over this powerful adversary is in submission to God –James
4:7. The Savior defeated Satan by countering all his
suggestions with the Word of God –Matt.4:1-11. He also
rendered an eternal irrevocable defeat to Satan by His death
for us on the cross. We have the same mighty weapons in our
hands –2Cor.10:4; Heb.4:12.
We have both offensive and defensive weapons we are to
use against Satan and his minions -Eph.6:11-18.

Barriers of worship are:
a)The flesh e) Ignorance.
b) Sin.f) Unskilled leadership.
c) The devil. g) Cultural barriers.
d) Distractions.

Examples of spiritual attack and counterfeits:
Mechanism.
Hypocrisy.
Unscriptural worship.
The world in the Church.
Demonic oppression and the spirit of
heaviness
Confusion;
Disagreement; and Misunderstanding.

Unskilled leadership:If the worship leader and
the team are unskilled they can be a hindrance
rather than facilitators. Examples:
Off key singers; and unskilled musicians.
Lack of sensitivity to the flow of the Spirit.
Professionalism.
Song arrangement and toning.
Communication.
Conclusion
God does not want anything to come between
you and Him –Ex.20:3.
