A family is usually depicted with parents and their
children. However, this unit will offer a deeper
characterization and understanding of this social

One might be surprised that there are a lot more
members of the family in addition to parents and
children.
Are you ready to know your family members?

The family is the basic unit of society.
It is defined by Kingsley Davis as a group of people
related by consanguinity that maintains close
relationship to each other.
The family is responsible for taking good care of the
future members of society. This includes attending to
the needs of the children from infancy until
adulthood.
It is also the first agent of socialization, which orients
children on how to be good members of society
CONSANGUINEAL AFFINAL FICTIVE
Consanguineal or kinship
by blood is considered as
the most basic and general
form of relations. The
relationship is achieved by
birth or blood affinity.
This type of kinship emphasizes
genetic connections and forms
the basis of many family and
social structures, influencing
responsibilities, rights, and
social status.
Examples: parents and their children,
between siblings, between nieces/nephews
and aunts/uncles)
Descent - refers to biological relationship;
individual’s child or offspring or ancestry.
Lineage - refers to the line where one’s
descent is traced.
Unilineal Descent - traced
through a single of ancestor
from either male and

2. Matrilineal
3. Bilateral
Patrilineal - belong to the kin
group of their father. Only the
males pass on to their children
their family identity.
Matrilineal - descent that is
traced through the female line.
Bilateral – descent through the
study of both parents’ ancestors.
Affinal kinship or kinship
based on marriage refers to
the type of relations
developed when a marriage
occurs. This type of kinship is
forged by marriage alliances.
Marriage is an important
social institution wherein two
persons, a man and a
woman, enter family life.
During this process, the partners
make a public, official, and
permanent declaration of their
union as lifetime couples.
