Unit 6 Cigarettes, Pipe Tobacco

Processing for Cigarettes Harvesting and Curing The first step in cigarette processing is the harvesting of tobacco leaves. The leaves are then cured by hanging them in well-ventilated barns or curing houses. Curing removes moisture from the leaves and develops the characteristic flavors of the tobacco . Blending and Flavoring After curing, the leaves are sorted by size, texture, and color. The sorted leaves are then blended to create a consistent flavor profile for the cigarette brand. Flavoring agents are added to the blended tobacco to enhance the taste.

Cutting and Rolling The blended and flavored tobacco is then cut into small pieces, also known as cut rag. The cut rag is then fed into a cigarette-making machine, which rolls the tobacco into paper tubes. The machine also adds filters and applies glue to seal the paper. Packaging The finished cigarettes are then packaged into packs or cartons for distribution.

Fermentation The blended and flavored tobacco is then fermented to further develop the flavors and aromas. Fermentation involves storing the tobacco in large containers or piles and allowing the natural heat generated by the tobacco to break down the chemical compounds . Cutting and Packaging The fermented tobacco is then cut into small pieces and packaged into tins or pouches for distribution.

Pipe Tobacco Aromatic – During the manufacturing process, casings are added to the tobacco. A casing is flavor that is added to the tobacco. Some of the most common casings are chocolate, vanilla, cherry, rum, apple, liquor, etc. Depending on the amount of casing used, a blend in this category can also be deemed “semi-aromatic” or “lightly-aromatic.” Non Aromatic – A mixture that relies solely on the natural ingredients of the tobacco to derive its flavors and aroma. In many cases, the tobacco is specially aged or fermented, which increases its sweetness.
